rope of climbing

Rules Questions

The rogue in our current campaign has a rope of climbing. the party was in a room with some floating islands in it. she was hiding under one of the island and wanted to command the rope of climbing to tie to the tail of a monster standing on the island above her and then use the rope to swing out and onto another island. the monster failed it's perception check to see the stealthy rogue.

Questions:

1. Can Rope of Climbing be used in this manner?

2. Is there a check of any kind beyond the obvious acrobatics to make the swing? (i.e. A grapple check etc. to see if the rope can be tied onto the monster?)

thanks

Fun, but, as we have a item that tie up targets, the rope of entanglement, I wouldn't allow that.

Rope of Climbing

Aura faint transmutation; CL 3rd

Slot none; Price 3,000 gp; Weight 3 lbs.

Description

A 60-foot-long rope of climbing is no thicker than a wand, but it is strong enough to support 3,000 pounds. Upon command, the rope snakes forward, upward, downward, or in any other direction at 10 feet per round, attaching itself securely wherever its owner desires. It can unfasten itself and return in the same manner.

A rope of climbing can be commanded to knot or unknot itself. This causes large knots to appear at 1-foot intervals along the rope. Knotting shortens the rope to a 50-foot length until the knots are untied, but lowers the DC of Climb checks while using it by 10. A creature must hold one end of the rope when its magic is invoked.

Construction

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, animate rope; Cost 1,500 gp

Rope of Entanglement

Aura strong transmutation; CL 12th

Slot none; Price 21,000 gp; Weight 5 lbs.

Description

A rope of entanglement looks just like any other hempen rope about 30 feet long. Upon command, the rope lashes forward 20 feet or upward 10 feet to entangle a victim. An entangled creature can break free with a DC 20 Strength check or a DC 20 Escape Artist check.

A rope of entanglement has AC 22, 12 hit points, hardness 10, and damage reduction 5/slashing. The rope repairs damage to itself at a rate of 1 point per 5 minutes, but if a rope of entanglement is severed (all 12 hit points lost to damage), it is destroyed.

Construction

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, animate objects, animate rope or entangle; Cost 10,500 gp

I would allow the rope to tie itself to some fixture of the island, not to a creature.

Note that the rope is fairly slow when moving around and has no stealth skill, so noticing it after it extend outside of the rogue square is a easy DC perception check.

Thanks,
I'll keep that in mind for the rest of this campaign. At the time I ruled it would take a grapple check to get the rope tied onto the monsters tail, which the rogue passed. It turned out to be a non-issue however, what the rogue did not know was that the monster has "Amorphous shape" and just made it's tail go away, causing the rogue to fall.
