Am playing S&S last night, and I mentioned to my fellow shashbucklers that I would be interested in playing Arueshalae in S&S if we were to play again when we finish.
One of my fellow players argued that she was significantly overpowered, particularly with her cohort, Arueshalae's gift. We went back and forth on this, with me agreeing that removing the gift would probably be needed, but that she wouldn't be overpowered (until we got a thrown a cyclops giant which we really weren't ready for).
Anyway, I am interested in other people's comments - is Arueshalae too powerful to play in either S&S or RotR?

I don't think Arue is overpowered at all, either in WotR or in any other set. The Gift is really no better than Lem helping people out with d4s (sure, it doesn't have a cost or location restriction unlike Lem, but it is also significantly less flexible in that you can only target 1 skill, and only on one person per round unless you take the Redeemed role whereas Lem can help out on anything including skills that the character's don't have listed).
If you port Arue over to other sets I'd bring along her owned loot cards too. You won't be able to start off with them (due to their adventure deck number they won't be in the box from the get-go, so even though Arue can treat them as if they had the Basic trait, she still can't pick cards that don't exist yet), but after they get introduced and you find yourself short on cards at the end of the scenario, you can pick them up. Alternatively you can pretend they aren't loot and invent some check to acquire on them and then shuffle them in with the rest of their normal cards. I'd probably also bring over the blessings of desna.
EDIT: That being said, if the rest of your group really don't want you to play her, I'd probably obey the social code and oblige.

Arueshalae is (to my knowledge) the only character card with an adventure deck number on 'er. In theory, you shouldn't be using her in any Adventure with an AD# less than 3.
That said, it's y'all's game. Do whatever's fun. I didn't find her all that awesome, but then, I was comparing to Crowe who'd been through ADs B thru 3 already. My scale may have been a bit skewed.
Similarly, her Loot items shouldn't be "in the box" for any game but WotR, by the rules...

The cohort, as noted above, is only going to add to one skill, and you have to decide beforehand, so the chances are it's going to be the wrong skill.
There are a lot of Sharks in S&S, so that's the evasion gone to waste - it also means with no guarantee of a starting weapon, you'll have to think carefully about exploring.
Even with a bow or a gun, she's only starting at d8+2 for combat, which is far from overpowered.
Personally, I'd ignore her adventure deck number and take her from the start, not sure whether I'd bother with the loot, but either way, I wouldn't expect her to be overpowered

She's not overpowered in the slightest; in fact she's significantly less powerful than a lot of other characters such as Damiel or Lini. In addition to what MightJim said, consider her roles:
Her Fallen role would be mostly useless because there are no corrupted cards in S&S or RotR. The only power the role would offer is the ally acquisition ability.
Her Redeemed role has three main abilities: A cleric-type healing ability that many characters have as a basic power, the ability to give someone the gift every turn instead of only on your turn, and a ranger scouting ability that - like the healing ability - many characters get as a basic power.
@ferris - why does your friend think she's overpowered?

I am unsure - I suspect its due to the fact that WotR seems harder than S&S (this person is in both my S&S group and my WOTR). WOTR is a much steeper battle than S&S (we've never REALLY had anyone in danger of dying in S&S, whereas we've had 2 deaths that we only survived due to the mythic paths we have)
Within WOTR - I do believe she is a heavy hitter, personally. But with the loss of the corruption abilities, those are no longer useful, you are right.
