Opinions on the Devilbane gazes ?

Advice

I'm already leery of illusion and enchantment based classes...as I have never had much luck landing effects.
But I'm considering a Mesmerist for Hell's vengence....
Will it be an exercise in futility ???

So not a single opinion ? That's a first :P

The Exchange

I've not played or read it, so here is a bump. It doesn't sound like an undead heavy AP so just having a back up plan might make it playable.

About half of them apply penalties that are more helpful to allies than to a mesmerist himself (planar binding charisma checks, energy resistance). The spell resistance one is really strong, however, and the concentration check one for SLAs can be useful, I suppose.

My biggest concern is being able to land effects in the first place...
I was hoping someone with Mesmerist experience would make me feel better about considering it :P

You won't have to worry about landing your spells if you build a mesmerist well. Devilbane has very little to do with that - the -2 or -3 will save penalty that comes with the default mesmerist is plenty. The spell resistance one is also very strong.

Get Spell Focus, Greater Spell Focus, a racial bonus (gnome for illusion, kitsune for enchantment) and a trait bonus (there's several out there which give bonuses to some spells) to the saving throw DCs of your spells, and pump your charisma sky-high. Nothing will make a save against you - but you do have to devote your build to ensuring your DCs are as high as you can possibly make them.
