I have a Warpriest/Hunter PC that rides around on a wolf. When we enter melee my attack bonus is terrible, as is my wolf's. I do however have the Helpful Halfling trait, letting me hand out a +4 attack bonus on one attack.
Now the wolf has a bite attack:
Bite +7 (1d6 +3 plus Trip)
The Trip is an auto-generated attempt upon hitting a foe. If I use Aid Another on the wolf's attack, does the +4 only count towards his initial attack? If the +4 doesn't help on both, can I ready an action to help ONLY on the Trip portion of the attack?

Aid Another modifies attack rolls or AC, not combat maneuvers such as trip.
That's quite right according to the RAW.
In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you’re in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent’s next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack.
You can also use this standard action to help a friend in other ways, such as when he is affected by a spell, or to assist another character’s skill check.
First, the description of Aid Another clearly states that it can be used to assist with a skill check.
Second, it states that you can grant your friend a +2 bonus on his next attack roll. Consider the rules for performing a combat maneuver just two pages later.
When you attempt to perform a combat maneuver, make an attack roll and add your CMB in place of your normal attack bonus.
So, Aid Another can grant its bonus to the attack roll made as part of performing a combat maneuver. However, the reason it doesn't work for situation in the original post is because Aid Another grants its bonus to the next attack roll made. Since the wolf makes an attack to get a free trip attempt, the Aid Another bonus is granted on the attack but not on the trip.

Actually, I think it might be more like the confirmation roll for a critical, in which case it would apply.
I am not sure, since the Trip is part of the bite attack, really, not a truly separate attack.
Trip/Grab/etc... are separate free action attacks granted by the associated attack, so they wouldn't benefit from Aid Another.

Actually, can't you specify, when you Aid Another, what you are Aiding? whether it is AC or to hit for his next Trip attempt? Obviously, when Aiding for a Combat Maneuver, you are targeting CMD 10, not AC 10....
Edit: Ready an action to Aid Another for Trip when the wolf successfully bites an opponent.
