Hooked from the first adventure. I may have died, don't recall. I loved the freeform nature of it compared to war games.
I was big on game and war games growing up. It's what I preferred to do inside, especially in the era when we got 3 TV channels, maybe 4 or 5 if the weather was good.
D&D for me was what we were already doing with Squad Leader, letting our leaders gain experience from scenario to scenario and personifying them.
It really was the perfect kind of game at the perfect time.
Still play tabletop RPGs to this day :)

Someone gave my younger brothers a copy of the first Fighting Fantasy book, Warlock of Firetop Mountain. They weren't that interested in it, so I took it off them and played it obsessively (and al the sequels).
I remember lying in bed with the 'flu trying to map the minotaur's maze section of the dungeon on a big sheet of paper, and failing.

I was 11, my dad brought home the Pathfinder Beginner Box. I made an elven cleric of Desna, my best friend made a human wizard, and my brother made an elven rogue. My dad, being a long-time player and GM ran the adventure wonderfully and I was instantly drawn in the minute he described the ancient jewel-eyed statue in front of Black Fangs Dungeon. The rest of the adventure was great and after that I started to run some games for my friends and got hooked on creating my own material to show off to my friends. 5 years later and I haven't looked back.
