Path of War - Learning Maneuvers Order

Advice and Rules Questions

So I just started using Path of War to expand my character options and I have a quick questions about how maneuvers are learned and the order of operations.

Say I have a Fighter 8 and I decide to take a level of Warlord at 9, when I hit my first level of Warlord I have an initiator level of 5 (which is enough for 3rd level maneuvers and stances).

The Warlord at 1st level gains 6 Maneuvers known and 1 Stance.

The stumbling block comes from Maneuvers with prerequisites. 3rd level maneuvers have a clause where you need to know at least 1 maneuver of the same Discipline to learn them.

Prerequisite(s): 1 Golden Lion maneuver

So the question is:

Can I actually learn these 3rd level maneuvers?
Can I spend 1 of my 1st level Warlord dip maneuvers known on a 1st or 2nd level Golden Lion maneuver to meet the prerequisite of the 3rd level Golden Lion maneuver right away when I dip in?
Are they concurrent or sequential? (Much like being able to take both Point-Blank Shot and Precise Shot at the same level, despite one requiring the other)

The game says "your knowledge of the Path of War increases" even when taking non Disciple levels and that your initiator level "determines the highest- level maneuvers you can choose".

On the other hand it says "you must always meet the prerequisites of the maneuver before selecting it." and that "you must meet a certain set of requirements to be able to choose that maneuver."

As a follow-up, are Stances learned at the same time?
Are they learned after?

The order of operations here isn't clear.
Thanks in advance.

Glad to see a new PoW user on board. Allow me to answer your questions.

If you have an Initiator level of 5 you can learn maneuvers of up to 3rd level. They have prerequisites, yes, but they are available for you to learn.

You mentioned that the "order of operations" wasn't clear, that's because there isn't one. All of your maneuvers and stances are functionally learned "at once" although if you want to get super technical, you pick the order in which they're learned.

In order to learn a 3rd level maneuver, you need to know one maneuver (or stance) of that discipline of a lower level. So as long as you have one maneuver of 1st or 2nd level of that discipline, you can choose to learn 3rd level maneuvers as well.

TL;DR: You can use maneuvers you learn concurrently to meet the prerequisites of maneuvers and stances that you might not otherwise be able to take. There is no required "Order of Operations" to follow, you just pick your maneuvers all at once.

Thanks for the response (I was worried there weren't that many PoW players on this board)!

I hate to be that guy but is there a section in the book that clarifies this that I may have glossed over? We only started using 3rd Party Stuff and the GM is still wary about 3rd Party Material, so I'm hoping there might be some more information to bring to the table to provide him when the multiclassing happens in a few sessions.

I figured it worked the way you say because even Wizards 'technically' have to write their spells into their book when they level up, and you can't scribe two spells at once.

I'm not just a player, I'm a writer for Path of War: Expanded, the next PoW book coming out (It just hit layout this past weekend).

As for resources, allow me to gather you some links:

Path of War Systems and Use- covers the basics of using Path of War materials.

Path of War Expanded - Systems and Use Expanded- Clears up some missed information in the first Systems and Use chapter. Useful even if you aren't interested in using our open playtest material.

Dreamscarred Press FAQ Thread- Our FAQ thread. We use GITP because you can still edit posts after the fact.

Path of War Guides- They're not up to date with Path of War: Expanded, but should still be serviceable.

Those links should cover most of what you need, and I and other PoW writers are usually around if you have other questions. Welcome to the fun!

O.O
Well I apologize for that then!

Thanks a lot for the links, the information and the huge clarification! I'm really excited to delve down into PoW and see what kind of great concepts I can come up with.

You guys rock!

Always happy to help. I'm usually around the interwebs somewhere, so feel free to ask any questions you have.
