Showcasing the more Exotic Spells from the Paizo Non-Core Books.

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

This thread is intended to showcase & spotlight the vast, myriad array of magic spells that have been published in all of Paizo's non-core books and "smaller softcover" books (Player Companions, Campaign Settings, etc).

When people choose-&-use magic spells for their spellcaster characters, the majority of spells chosen are usually core spells found in the CRB. After all, not only do players have more familiarity with them ... the core spells are also pretty darn good at accomplishing a vast majority of the PC's adventuring objectives.

What I liked to do is to give y'all the forum to analyze, evangelize or criticize a key magic spell (or a few) from the lower profile Paizo books. Yes, your first inclination may to go talk about spells from the hardcovers that supplement the Core books (like UM, UC, ACG, ARG, etc). And that's fine. But I'd like for you to prioritize the showcasing of spells from the softcover books (Campaign Setting, Player Companion, etc).

You know ... the rare and exotic spells. :-) One's we haven't heard of much but deserve the spotlight in some fashion.

I'll bring up a few of mine a little later. But thanks for your time & attention!

Old but overlooked:
Battering Blast from Dungeons of Golarion

Because I love Sneak Attack:
Sense Vitals from Dirty Tactic's Toolbox

Silver Crusade

Emergency Force Sphere

:
Sorcerer/Wizard 4
School: Evocation (Force)
Casting time:1 Immediate action
Spell Components Verbal
Effect: 5-ft.-radius hemisphere of force centered on you
Duration 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw None; Spell Resistance no

As wall of force, except you create a hemispherical dome of force with hardness 20 and a number of hit points equal to 10 per caster level. The bottom edge of the dome forms a relatively watertight space if you are standing on a reasonably flat surface. The dome shape means that falling debris (such as rocks from a collapsing ceiling) tend to tumble to the side and pile up around the base of the dome. If you make a DC 20 Craft (stonemasonry), Knowledge (engineering), or Profession (architect or engineer) check, the debris is stable enough that it retains its dome-like configuration when the spell ends, otherwise it collapses.

Normally this spell is used to buy time for dealing with avalanches, floods, and rock-slides, though it is also handy in dealing with ambushes.

This spell has saved my various wizards/sorcerers/Arcanists/ bacon many times...Oh I liked it so much I got it for my magus as well by spending a Magus Arcana to get Spell Blending-and I picked Emergency force sphere.

Stone Call

:
School conjuration (creation) [earth]; Level bloodrager 2, druid 2, magus 2, ranger 2, sorcerer/wizard 2; Elemental School earth 2

CASTING
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, DF

EFFECT
Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area cylinder (40-ft. radius, 20 ft. high)
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

A rain of dirt, gravel, and small pebbles fills the area, dealing 2d6 points of bludgeoning damage to every creature in the area. This damage only occurs once, when the spell is cast.

For the remaining duration of the spell, this debris covers the ground, making the entire area difficult terrain. At the end of the duration, the rocks disappear, leaving no aftereffects (other than the damage dealt).

another favorite spell with a nice bit of damage and an effect that impedes movement. Enjoy!

Don't forget Keep Watch. The party never need fight in their pajamas again.

I love all of those (especially Emergency Force Sphere and Battering Blast) and have to add the Aram Zey's focus spells from Inner Sea Magic. So very nice when there isn't a Rogue around!

I'm a fan of Pugwumpi's Grace.

There are several high quality low-level spells from softcover books. Many of these are quite popular, but some are less so.
Alter Summoned Monster
Blood Money
Burning Arc
Burning Disarm
Carry Companion
Embrace Destiny
Ice Slick
Infernal Healing
Liberating Command
Limp Lash
Snowball

There are also some excellent high-level spells from softcover books, including Greater Angelic Aspect, Echean's Excellent Enclosure, and Aroden's Spellbane.

A recent fun one from Heroes of the Streets: Coin Shot Not a perfect spell, but certainly is fun.

Not on the PRD yet, but Shadow Enchantment from Occult Realms.

Subjective Reality, Ectoplasmic Hand, and Out of Sight from Occult Origins.

It goes really well with Fey Magic (from the same book).

Scarab Sages

Cevah - embrace destiny is ok, but lucky number is better due to the duration.

Emergency Force Sphere has saved my players (I'm the GM) a decent amount of times. It comes in handy when you're dealing with avalanches, as they're currently in the Crown of the World.
