So I am an Elf Ranger and I want to get Dragon Hide Studded Leather armor and Dragon Hide has 10 hp so would that armor break after ten hit points are dealt to me?

Ok so it doesn't break when on me unless it is targeted
also because it has a hardness of ten will it absorb 10 damage points for me?
Spencealot wrote: also because it has a hardness of ten will it absorb 10 damage points for me? No. That only reduces the damage the armor itself takes. It does not apply to you.
Also, normal studded leather has 15 hit points (armor bonus x 5 hp). Dragon hide has double the hit points of normal leather, so that should increase the hit points of dragon hide studded leather to 30.
No. The HP and hardness for materials or objects are specifically if you are trying to break that object. It's relevant for sundering shields or weapons, breaking things like containers or doors, cutting ropes and so on. I suppose, for studded leather armour, it would be used if the item wound up left in a building on fire or some such.
The hardness and HP also increase if the armor is magical.
The only time it will really matter is if its specifically targeted by a sunder attempt, or if you take the armor off so it's unattended, and it gets hit with an AoO spell.

Or if you roll a Natural 1 on a Reflex saving throw against an AoE spell.
That happened to one of my pcs once - the backpack failed, and so did a potion of oil of etherealness and so did a packet of diamond dust. Quick jaunt through the ethereal plane, all sparkly...Brilliant! (This was decades ago though, well before Twilight.)
so what would the dragon hide do for me other than protect me from an energy type
As studded leather? I don't know. I think the major use is as a non-metallic breastplate for druids. It'll be masterwork, at least. And possibly look good. And seriously annoy any dragon of that type you meet...
so what does it actually do though?
It is masterwork studded leather armor that is cheap to enchant vs an element. That's it.
Special Materials - Dragonhide can be used to make hide, banded, half-plate, breastplate or plate armour. It doesn't list studded armour. It doesn't protect you from the energy type, but adding the protection magically is cheaper. No other benefits.
As far as I know, it's principally used by druids who can't wear metallic armour
Ok so what would the best armor option be for me as an elf ranger
Spencealot wrote: Ok so what would the best armor option be for me as an elf ranger What is your dexterity modifier?
What level are you? How much do you have to spend, what is your dex, do you care about movement speed? Is armor check penalty an issue? Preferred weapon? Any other peotective items? Alot of factors go into giving a good answer to your question.
I am lvl 3 My dex mod is +5 and armor check penalty is sorta an issue , bow is preferred I have like 200 to spend but I want options at least up to 1000
Best armor with a +5 Dex mod: Mithral Breastplate (30' mv speed, +6 AC, +5max Dex, -1 ACP, 4200gp)
For 200gp: Chain Shirt (30' mv speed, +4 AC, +4 max dex, -2 ACP, 100gp)
Better protection, less speed: Breastplate (20' mv speed, +6 AC, +3 max dex, -4 ACP, 200gp)
Same protection as Breastplate with full speed: Mithral Chain Shirt, 30' mv speed, +4 AC, +6 max dex, -0 ACP, 1100gp)
So low end, studded leather. Just under 1000 you get darkleaf (leather) lamellar. Just over 1000 will be your mithral chain shirt.

Thank You I will probably try to get the Mithral Breastplate
also What is the best armor under 2600 gp?
And where do I find the mithral breastplate in the book
Spencealot wrote: And where do I find the mithral breastplate in the book In equipment under Special Materials. You take a normal breastplate, and make it out of mithral.
any good ways to make money fast to get the mithral breastplate
and are mithral things considered well made always?
It's not an MMO - so getting $ varies greatly. You might consider borrowing from party-mates and paying them back over the next level or so.
And yes - mithril armor/weapons are automatically masterwork.
yeah none of my teammates even together will have over 500 gp but our DM doesn't usually give gold when people get killed so I will just sell stuff until that day
