Dungeons and Dragons has always been filled with iconic monsters and traps, and has spawned several tropes accordingly over the decades. Yet, many players haven’t fought a dragon. Or a Mind Flayer. Or even just goblins/hobgoblins/bugbears. Pathfinder has continued this tradition of excellence in gaming, and people have developed more clichés as they play. I have a homebrewed campaign setting built around this idea that I’ve used successfully for several tabletop games. It is filled with iconic encounters, like rescuing a princess from a tower, fighting a red dragon to loot it’s treasure hoard, or protecting a village from bandits. I’m looking to bring it to the Paizo forums.
This interest check thread is to see if people would like to play in a world that isn’t dissimilar to the way many people fondly remember their first adventures: Through Rose-Colored Glasses of Nostalgia and Fond Remembrance…tempered by lots and lots of TV and Internet Tropes. Players would assume the role of classic heroes, intentionally playing on fantasy clichés to really play up the setting. Previous F2F characters include the farmboy who picked up a magic sword and found out he is the long-lost prince of the kingdom. The virginal priestess who rode a unicorn. The halfling rogue who was something of a klepto, but with a heart of gold. The bard who died. A LOT. (That was the same month the Gamers: Dorkness Rising movie came out, with the pile of bards, so it has really stuck with my gaming group, having been solidified in a way we would have never imagined!) Additionally, every time I run this setting, the party goes through a classic adventure module as part of the main questline. Previous modules include the Tomb of Horrors, Expedition to Barrier Peaks, and even a brief foray into Ravenloft.
Would you like to come on this journey with me? If I get enough interest, I will gladly post a recruitment thread. It will be Pathfinder rules; probably Roll20.

I've an idea for a drow dual-wielding scimitars. I know it's not strictly within the premise of this game, but maybe you could make one exception to that 'cliché' thing?
You know, I should have expected this. Normally I rule out drow, but I think that should be fine. No nobles though. Standard drow are fine, though I recommend the Surface Infiltrator alternate racial trait. Or a standard elf with the drow-blooded racial traits. Either of those are fine.

Hahaha, nice! I suppose the slick and dashing outlaw who fights against the corrupt goverment would fit under the cliche?
Sure! That's a great one too. The government of the kingdom is so shiny on the outside, but there is a LOT of room for corruption. And a couple of the neighboring kingdoms are just plain awful.

It does sound quite fun. :) Would it be a play-by-post with the map run in Roll20, or will it be an actual Roll20 game?
It will be a Play-by-Post here on the Paizo site, with Roll20 Maps. I'll try to put an imugr link to maps as well, so we can feel out what works for the group.
What about the dashing bard who seduces every woman he meets, including the villainous ones, and without actually meaning to?
This is always a fun one too. This one pairs well with a class cliché too, like the innocent paladin farmboy mentioned above. As a side note, he rolled stats, and had an 18 Str, 18 Cha...and a 4 Int. That was a fun character to have at the table.
XD, I wanna see the Character Creation already, this will be amazingly fun!
It certainly seems like we could get a full party. I have most of the recruitment details already written down; the recruitment post will be up tomorrow!
Please, feel free to keep tossing around clichés and tropes; it will help people get inspired!

I am so happy you said that this will be play by post! I have been looking for a game an this one keeps catching my eye.
I would love to play a character cursed with un-death but still maintaining his conscience and intellect! That might be a bit rough to fully apply the undead template but perhaps something akin to magical leprosy?
If that falls through I was thinking a surly beer loving dwarf with horned helmet and two handed axe might be along the right lines.

Well I am basing this guy on the wizard who gets everyone going on the quest and then dissapears for a while to do secret wizard stuff only to reappear just in time to save the group from the big bad indefeatable monster of doom.
Lucky for you guys I was off researching how to find the one thing that could beat the big bad indefeatable monster of doom...Ok He's totally Gandalf with some Alannon The druid from the shannara books tossed in for good measure and the dude from the Belgariad.

While I do admire your cliché-fu, I can't help but think that that concept would require you to not be present for a good bit of the game, which is probably not ideal.

Well I wasn't actually going to dissapear, but you do bring up a good point. Hmmm...Well then that leaves me with the actual Fizban from the dragonlance sagas or maybe I could go with the cleric who only heals, now that's a classic.

Working on the recruitment post now. Once I have finished typing up a good overview of the world, I will be posting it.
SOON.
Cool, After much thought, I am going with the unassuming orphaned farmboy with great powers that lay undiscoverd inside. He is whisked away in the dead of the night just as a great evil is being awakened.
He asks lots of questions but only gets cryptic answers from his caretakers
