How high can you crank your will save against Mind Effecting?

Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thinking about Psychic builds, I was wondering how many effects you can stack to make yourself effectively immune to mind effecting spells/abilities. Let me know any ideas I missed.

Level 20 Psychic
+12 Will save
+4 Enchantment Foil spell
+8 Mind Blank spell (resistance bonus)
+8 Thought Shield V spell (circumstance bonus)
+2 Iron Will feat
+4 Mental Placidity from Tranquility Discipline (immediate action)
+4 Demonic Obedience feat (Socothbenoth, there are others I think) (profane bonus)
+4 Greater Heroism spell (morale bonus)
+20 Moment of Prescience spell (insight bonus)

That gets you a +66 before your Wisdom bonus, if any, +46 after you burn your Moment of Prescience. If we assume no prebuffs of 1 minute/level or less duration you lose Mental Placidity (keep Thought Shield III-VI as your immediate action) and swap Greater Heroism for Heroism, taking us down to +60/40 before your Wisdom bonus.

I think the worst mind effecting DC in a published monster is likely Nocticula's Domination ability at DC 43, so that's not too shabby!

What else am I missing?

You could include a 1-level dip to Spiritualist somewhere in there. That'd get you a +4 untyped bonus on saving throws against mind-affecting effects.

Yeah, but if you're doing dips you can also look at two levels of Paladin for Divine Grace or two levels of Mesmerist for Towering Ego. I'd rather find things that are part of a cohesive build and not too gimmicky. I particularly like the Demonic Obedience here, because it also gives you +1 or 2 to mind affecting DCs for your own spells, so mechanically it's pretty perfect for a Psychic.

Half-elves with the Dual Minded Racial Trait get a +2 bonus to Will Saves.

Yeah, that's a good one. I'm probably missing several items.

You could also multiclass a bunch of level 1 classes with good will saves and get +40 that way. If you have a party wizard for the buffs spells, then we're talking pretty good.

And there are various magical items of course: Cloak of Resistance, Stone of Luck, etc.

Cloak of Resistance doesn't stack with Mind Blank, but the Stone of Luck does give another +1, or +2 with Fate's Favored.

You can get a +1 competence bonus with a Pale Green Prism Ioun Stone.

In the version with pre-buffing, Moment of Greatness will give you another +4 on one roll by doubling the bonus from Greater Heroism.

Undead Anatomy III gives a +8 untyped bonus. This is easily obtainable with Limited Wish, and if you don't have time to buff immediately before hand, you can get it with Skeleton Summoner and a Summoner's Robe.

The Exchange

If at lv 20 why don't you become a lunar oracle.

"In addition, you become immune to mind-affecting and language-dependent effects, as well as effects that specifically target only humanoids."

Flat immunity, no need to make saves.

You need 20 levels in Oracle to get the capstone. Nineteen levels of Psychic and one of Lunar Oracle won't cut it.

Gisher, he was talking about just being an oracle instead of a psychic.

Or a Occult Oracle, who can become a ghost and gains immunity to mind-affecting.

But I think the point was to optimize this for a Psychic in particular.

Maybe he meant that, but he talked about becoming a Lunar Oracle at level 20 so I'm not sure.
