Spear and Shield for Bloodrager

Advice

Dark Archive

Hello all,

I want to be a Bloodrager that essentially will be a Greek hoplite. However to have a longspear and a shield seems impossible in this system minus taking 3 levels of fighter.

Is there a way to do this I am missing?

A medium size creature could wield a small longspear in one hand at a -2 penalty.

Spears are almost always 2h weapons. However there are a few ways to get around this. Being strictly a bloodrager limits that though, so I only know of three ways to do this.

1) Use a buckler.

2) Use a small sized spear. Lower damage die and a penalty to hit, but you have reach.

3) Effortless lace.

Scarab Sages

4) Polearm Choke Up Weapon Trick in weapon master's handbook.

If you dont mind 3pp stuff, Shaft and Shield let's you do it.

What is the polearm choke up trick? That has me curious. Also a -2 for a small longspear might work. Thanks guys

Dipping 3 levels in Phalanx Soldier Fighter will allow you to use shield in one hand and spear or polearm in another with one hand. Also using Clawhand shield will allow you to cast spell while equipping the shield.

The new player companion that will be released on the 18th (subscribers have early access) has a feat that allows the use of a two-handed polearm(i.e. spear) in one-hand with an attack and damage penalty.

Consider being Steelblooded, Primalist, and perhaps Destined Bloodline. If you have a shield, heavy armor, Destined AC bonus, and Beast Totem AC bonus, you'll be untouchable.

Good suggestion, that is essentially my plan. Destined is by far the best defensive bloodline. I might go cross-blooded with Arcane.

I believe there is a one handed spear in the "Distant Shores" campaign settings which recently came out. The Doru. It's a spear, it can be used as a spear(two handed) with simple weapon proficiency, but it can be used one handed as a martial weapon with only a x2 critical, or as an exotic weapon, one handed spear with x3 critical.
