Q re: defeating Enemy Ship in general

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Apologies to the question, but still learning how to play.

I encountered the Class 6 Dominator ship and the checks are as follows- WIS/SUR:8 -OR- DEX/RNG: 11.

I'm wondering if this is legal...

1) Valeros is at location, commanding the ship. He has DEX 1D6. In hand, I have 'Cutlass', but it does not list RNG or DEX, but the text does say I can discard for 1D8. Can I discard this for the check even if it doesn't list a trait of RNG/DEX?

2) Lirianne is at same location, but not her turn. In her hand she has a Basic Pistol. Can she 'reveal' Pistol to add 1D6 (dex) to the combat roll above in addition to Valeros's, or can she only add a dice if she had a Blessing (she doesn't btw)?

I'm thinking that if I discard Cutlass and reveal Pistol, Valeros check to defeat would be: 1D6 + 1D8 + 1D6, but I'm questioning my play.

1. No.
2. No.

The first thin Valeros must do is choose which of these 4 checks he will be attempting:

Wisdom 8
Survival 8
Dexterity 11
Ranged 11

Whatever one he chooses, he can then play cards to affect that kind of check. The Cutlass says "For you combat check..." and this is not a combat check. (It is only a Combat check if you chose Combat from the skills listed in the check to defeat/acquire. And that wasn't an option here.)

Valeros will probably choose Dexterity. He is attempting a Dexterity check to defeat a ship. He (and other players) can play cards that apply to his situation. So, cards that apply to a Dexterity check would work. So would cards that apply to checks to defeat a ship. Or to checks while commanding a ship.

A card to help a non-combat Dexterity check would be great. But a card to help a combat Dexterity check wouldn't work.

Couldn't quite finish that up before the forums had some issues.

So, basically, if the check you are attempting says Combat, it is a Combat check. Otherwise, it is a non-Combat check. And after that, the cards you play have to apply to the check.

The reason Lirianne can't play the Pistol is two-fold, it isn't a Combat check and it isn't her check. (The Pistol says "For your Combat check.)

Valeros can't use the Cutlass, simply because it isn't a Combat check. If he attempts the Dexterity check, he'd probably like someone to play a Bless of Milani on him (it add 2 dice any non-combat Dexterity check).

And cards only care about location if they say they care about location. Anyone, anywhere can play a Blessing of Milani for Valeros. But Potion of Heroism says you have to choose a character at your location, so location matters for it.

Basically, the limits are on the cards. And you can't defeat, acquire, evade, succeed or fail at something for someone else.

Good luck on your adventure!
