Rules Questions

I am reading one of the pathfinder tales and in one chapter an archer is teaching a character the importance of using a bow as a melee weapon and how effectivw it is. Now by RAW wouldnt that be an improvised weapon and as such mean that it is extremely ineffective?

Yes, I think. This is probably the equivalent of the Catch Off-Guard feat.

There is the BowStaff spell.

This could be the character taking the martial weapon proficiency (type of bow) feat. Feats are a representation of taking the time to learn something and what better way to learn something than by having some one teach you?

Wait, can you take Martial Proficiency (bow) to use a bow as a melee weapon without penalty?

Elvencraft bows in 3.5 (Races of the wild) could be used as quarterstaves as well as composite longbows.

Nope.

But you can take this feat.
