Qualify for Prestige Class (PFS Legal)

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

I remember a while back there was a FAQ that if your race gives you the ability to cast second level spells, that can qualify your for Prestige Classes which require second level spells.

Does the wayang's alternate racial trait qualify for this since it "works like invisibility"?

What about the kitsune's Change Shape ability?

Thanks!

Nope. That was errata'ed. You can not qualify for PrC's with SLA's.

Drats :( I was thinking of doing a wayang unchained rogue 3 / magus (Kensai) into an arcane trickster using an elven branched spear... Guess I'll have to just pick up a few more levels of Magus before I hit the PrC.

Thanks!

Just a warning, if it looks like a "Shortcut" into a PrC, it is likely banned, errata'ed or will be in the future, they do NOT like shortcuts into PrCs.

They changed Mystic Theurge from "hey, this might be pretty cool with a specialized build" to a class where you have to be down 1.5 spell levels at minimum and down 2 if you want to be SAD.

Accomplished Sneak Attacker will let you enter Arcane Trickster early (e.g. Rogue 1/Wizard 3/Arcane Trickster X), and it even got accepted into PFS. So I don't believe that they are opposed to all shortcuts into Prestige Classes.

What is Accomplished Sneak Attacker? I can't find a reference for it.

It's in the Dirty Tactics Toolbox.

Spoiler:
Accomplished Sneak Attacker
Your strikes against a foe’s vital spots are extra deadly.
Prerequisite: Sneak attack class feature.
Benefit: Your sneak attack damage increases by 1d6.
Your number of sneak attack dice cannot exceed half your character level (rounded up).

So one level in Rogue, Snakebite Striker, etc. is enough to meet the 2d6 sneak attack prerequisite. It probably won't help with your build since you seem to be going for that sweet two-handed Dex to damage, but I think it indicates that Paizo is not completely opposed to making early entry PrC options available.

It's from Dirty Tactics Toolbox. It adds 1d6 to your sneak attack (but your total sneak attack dice cannot exceed half your character level). Basically a little "make-up" feat for multiclassers and slayers.

The history of using Spell-Like Abilities to qualify for Prestige Classes goes something like this:

Messageboards (M): "Do SLAs count as qualifying for prestige classes?"

Designers (D): "Sure, why not. We'll make a FAQ to that effect."

Optimizers (O): 1 level of Wizard and I can be a Bloatmage starting at level 2. I can finish the prestige class by level 11! Also with some careful selections of race and mystery I can be a sorcerer 2/oracle 1/ MT 8 by level 11. I will never run out of spells! By the way, did you see the Evangelist class in Inner Sea Gods? You have to take three ranks in K:religion for the prereq feat but as long as you play an Aasimar you can take the first level of the prestige class at level 4 instead of 6!

D: OK, we said it was fine to qualify using SLAs because we have a design philosophy that prestige classes are supposed to be less mechanically ideal than base classes. Clearly we didn't consider all the possible ways that could be exploited. Particularly with MT. We're removing that option.

Yes the idea was to do something unique with the 2-Handed Dex to damage since I normally play martial characters and wanted to dabble in magic. But I may pick up the book and feat just to help with the SA lost from magus levels.

Thanks for the suggestion though it's definitely something to think about incase I decide to ditch the 2-Handed Dex.

Scarab Sages

Wayang doesn't work anyways. Their ability is (Su), not (Sp).

It does come in really handy since it doesn't provoke an AoO.
