From the way it reads, they work like archtype being you can only have one secondary class because it would mesh with the others. I would like to make a ala carte type character by being able to select any 3level power at rd and any 3or7th level power at 7th etc. Giving lots more options. Would this work? Would it be op?

it would be stronger than currently because the whole package is supposed to be balanced, but picking and choosing the best options would make you strong.
EX getting rage lv 3 and wildshape lv 11 and revelation lv7. Or getting inspire courage and not caring about the rest of the bard stuff.

A better way to look at it is like a 5 feat chain that you are locked into when you take the first one. You can't mix and match, because you're trading 5 very specific feats for 5 very specific abilities in a chain. As far as I know, you can't even regular multiclass and still variant multiclass at the same time. Even if you could, you couldn't regular multiclass rogue while vmc rogue, for bonus sneak dice. It's a matter of balance and I see a lot of ways to abuse being allowed to pick and choose class features like that.

Don't get me wrong I can see how it could be abused too. But I really like some abilities. I would love some ninja tricks, with magus and unarmed combat of a monk. You can use spells to mimic rage, and beast form. But trying to do it all with out super muilt classing. Quivering palm is sweet and will have to look at lawful evil assassin builds using it.
