I just want to confirm: failing the Combat 25 check does not in itself do damage to a character, except that they take d4+1 Combat damage due to Gelderfang's power.

In other words, if I roll a 15 on the Combat 25 check, I don't take 10 Combat damage plus d4+1 Combat damage, I just take d4+1 Combat damage.

I wouldn't have asked this for anything other than a Combat check. It seems odd to have a Combat check that you don't take damage for.

Well the rule book says you take damage in that way only from failed checks to defeat against monsters. You should only take the d4+1

Yeah. Only for failing to defeat a monster, regardless of what check to defeat you attempted. If you remember, there was a barrier in RotR that took a combat check to defeat. So it isn't the type of check, but rather the type of card (and that it is specifically the check to defeat) that matters when taking damage.

Yes and now that with have more and more Villains or Henchmen that are barriers rather than monsters, you better read the card well (see the Stringy Fiend case).
