Seeking alternative firearm rules

Homebrew and House Rules

I did a bit of searching through the suggestion forums and the search function, but I was hoping someone might be able to direct me either to a thread or even a 3PP product that present alternative rules for firearms. I have an idea in my head and I want to research if someone already did the mechanical work for me or if I would need to start from scratch.

This was in a few sci-fi products but is easy to adapt: Firearms don't target touch AC or misfire but naturally add dex to damage.

I liked simply switching every instance of touch ac to flat footed ac. This includes the caveat where in the original rules were firearm attacks don't count as touch attacks. Factor in I typically don't track common type ammunition.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

RGG released alternate rules awhile back where guns attack AC, get to confirm critals against touch, and don't have a misfire value. Personally I like these rules and implement them into basically every game.

Paradigim Press' Arcanis had substantial firearms rules when it was still in 3.5. I believe the PDFs are still on sale. DriveThruRPG has a nice bundle price for a complete set.

Give my firearms house rules a look. I removed touch attacks, made misfires a nonfactor for proficient wielders, added Dex-to-damage as an innate feature, and tweaked the gunslinger in accordance to the changes. I've run these in my campaign for over a year now, and it has gone very well. The gunslinger is still strong (I should have nerfed the critical modifier), but the lack of touch attacks and misfires make them less annoying for player and GM alike. I wrote these rules after performing a mechanic analysis of firearm touch attacks.
