Monk unchained Flurry - Non-monk weapons

Rules Questions

With the new Unchained Monk, when doing a flurry of blows, do all atacks have to be with unarmed strikes and Monk weapons, or only the bonus attacks granted by the flurry class feature.

At 1st level, a monk can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action. When making a flurry of blows, the monk can make one additional attack at his highest base attack bonus. This additional attack stacks with the bonus attacks from haste and other similar effects. When using this ability, the monk can make these attacks with any combination of his unarmed strikes and weapons that have the monk special weapon quality. He takes no penalty for using multiple weapons when making a flurry of blows, but he does not gain any additional attacks beyond what's already granted by the flurry for doing so. (He can still gain additional attacks from a high base attack bonus, from this ability, and from haste and similar effects).

So the first bold section shows that the flurry is an attack granted in addition to your normal amount of attacks. The second states that when using said ability those attacks must be unarmed or monk weapons, does that mean the rest of my regular attacks can be from any type of weapon?

The extra attack granted is not flurry. Flurry is a special full-attack action that gives you one additional attack. You must use unarmed strikes and/or weapons with the monk special weapon quality on every single attack of a flurry.

Scarab Sages

There is really no need to use a non-monk weapon with unchained monk though, as they are proficient in all monk weapons. Some of them are very good. Sansetsukon, Nine Section Whip, 9 Ring Broadsword, Seven Branched Sword, and Temple Sword are all solid weapons.

If you really wanted to use a non-monk weapon for some reason, you can always take a dip of crusader cleric and use crusader's flurry.

True, sansetsukon is just a small step behind great sword (19-20, 1d10), and temple swords (which every kind of monk gets) is the same as a long sword.

Overall, there isn't too much need for non-monk weapons other than very basic flavor or someone trying to get ahold of 18-20...and that is hardly necessary anyway. So meh.

You already have better flurry, who needs it to have more power? Most complaints about unmonk is that the other class features are not that amazing. The improved flurry is one of the few things that go undisputed as an upgrade.

To the OP, yes the weapon must be or count as an unarmed attack or a monk weapon.

The main reason, I think, for using a non-monk weapon would be to gain dex to damage. Since slashing grace is out you're left with fencing grace, dervish dance or 3 levels of unchained rogue.

Or agile weapon property.

It is an option. Monks only need a single weapon for a flurry, so they can easily afford the +1.

And I am unsure whether you would have much of a problem before you can afford that, if you take power attack have a minimal str score. I mean...that was the solution for dex builds before all these dex to damage feats, and they were still popular then too.

I generally skip Agile as I dislike being forced into using only one unique weapon instead of being able to use backup weapons, special material weapons or using a found weapon. Creatures like Rust Monsters or Adherers can quickly have you using your strength on a dex build if you rely on Agile.

Note, I make an exception for amulet of mighty fists or the bodywrap as it's much harder to have them taken away and it effects multiple weapons.
