Racial Points - Spending

Rules Questions

Couple of questions...

Some of the racial powers state:
"Each additional time you take this trait, increase its cost by 1 RP"

Does this mean each level is +1 more expensive than the previous level? Ie: Buy it at 2RP, and buying it again means the 2nd purchase is 3RP, and buying it again is 4RP (so 3x is a total of 9RP)

Or does it mean just +1 to the total, so 2x is a total of (2RP+1RP+1RP=4RP)?

Flight states that every additional 2RP spent increases the maneuverability/speed. But flight is a 4RP cost. So, does this mean that everytime you "upgrade" flight (at 4RP) you get +2 maneuverability, +20 speed? Or do you pay 2RP per upgrade which, in an Advanced Race game, where you are limited to 4 traits per category, spending a total of (4+2+2+2=10) 10RP maxxes out your Movement traits? One way caps at Perfect/90', the other at Good/60'.

The rules for above basic racial traits vary from trait to trait
Flight (4RP) total 4 - 30 ft, clumsy
Flight (2RP) total 6 - 40 ft, poor
Flight (2RP) total 8 - 50 ft, average
etc.

Normal Speed - 30 ft
Fast (1RP) total 1 - 40 ft
Fast (2RP) total 3 - 50 ft
Fast (3RP) total 6 - 60 ft
etc.

Thanks for verifying my thoughts on incremental costs (such as Fast). However, I already knew that flight (2rp) increase the distance/skill of flight. The question was to ask if you can buy it at 2RP increments. It says you can take the trait multiple times (and the trait costs: 4), so if you take it one additional time, it seems like you'd pay 4 points and jump straight from 30'/clumsy to 50'/average. If you took it 2 more times, you'd jump to 70'/Perfect, and then 90'/Perfect.

If however the next level only costs 2RP, then you'd cap out (after 3 upgrades) at 60'/good. I just want to verify that it's either the 1st method (4RP increments) or the 2nd method (2RP increments).

Nobody? :(

Initially taking flight would cost 4RP, and each additional increment would cost 2RP; initial purchase plus one increment would cost 6RP total, plus two increments would cost 8RP total, etc.

For abilities with the first wording you discussed it works the first way you described: initial purchase would be 2RP, an additional purchase would cost 3RP (total of 5RP), third purchase would cost 4RP (total of 9RP), etc. Flight does not have that wording however, so it does not work the way and is instead simply 2RP per purchase after the initial buy.

Is this opinion or officially supported, the flight costs? The wording equally supports either interpretation, so am looking for official support to one of them. Hero Lab, for example, says you have to buy in 4RP increments...

I suppose it's just my opinion, but personally I'm not sure how your other interpretation could be valid based in the wording of the ability:

Quote:
Flight (4 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race have a fly speed of 30 feet with clumsy maneuverability. Special: This trait can be taken more than once. For each additional 2 RP spent, the race's fly speed increases by +10 feet, and the maneuverability improves by one step.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Does HeroLab give you two increments of benefit per 4RP spent beyond the initial purchase? I guess I can see how that might be valid, but if they only give you one increment per 4RP they've got it wrong.

The introductory text has this to say about the RP cost when purchasing abilities more than once:

Quote:
For racial traits you can take more than once, this is the number of RP you pay each time you take the traits, unless stated otherwise in the Special line of the trait description.

That would seem to also support my interpretation. :)

I'd say 1st interpretation. You're taking the trait again for additional benefit, not just modifying an existing version (As with flight).

Yes, they give you 2 increments of benefits per 4RP spent in Hero Lab, however, I tend to agree with it being 2RP per increment (thus maxing at 60' for an Advanced Race with a 4 movement max for purchases). The wording does seem to weigh towards our interpretation, had just hoped this had been addressed already and that there was an official answer. :/

Also thanks Self, I'm under the same impression based on the wording.
