Rules Questions

If take a spellcaster class as a secondary class, do you gain any kind of casting ability with it?

Only the casting ability mentioned in the VMC article.

For Clerics, that means you can spontaneously convert prepared spells to Cure or Inflict, depending on your deity. You are also restricted to only casting deity-acceptable spells.

For Paladin, you can cast Detect Evil at 3rd level.

For Wizards, you can get cantrips at 11th level.

For Inquisitors, you are restricted to only casting deity-acceptable spells.

For Oracles, at 7th level you can some orisons.

For Summoners, you can Summon Monster.

What about Witches? I know they get a patron, but what does that do if they're not getting spells?

You get only what is listed in the VMC, no more and no less.

I think that I know the answer, but would like someone else to confirm my reading of the Cleric VMC, Diety entry: "She also gains the cleric's spontaneous casting ability, which she can use with any prepared casting classes that have the appropriate spells on their spell lists."

That means that if I have a Bard with VMC Cleric, that I do NOT gain the spontaneous casting ability, right?

(assuming I am correct, rats!)

Right, it works with Witches, but I can't think of anything else.

It would also work with druids, shamans, paladins, rangers, and possibly a vigilante archetype or two. Warpriests would also qualify but they already have it from their primary class, right?

Like I said, rats! I have a character concept that is a Bard with VMC Cleric, and spontaneous Cures would have been a bonus (but not needed for the concept).

Was just hoping that there was an errata that changed that. Oh well,

thanks guys.

well bards already can learn the cure spells and is already a spontaneous caster. so there no need for this to work.

now if you had some kind of bard Archtype that made them a you prepared caster this would work and have a use.

I Understand. It would have made the concept cleaner to have the ability to spontaneously cast cures, but like I said it will work without the ability.

Thanks for the help,
