The recent addition of the Promethean alchemist to the roster of companion options, while nice does not seem to be as competitive as other options.
From what I understand, the Homunculus can use both the toughened hide and armor enhancement modifications, but even with those, it cannot compete with both eidolons or animal companions who are both superior in base statistics and advancement by level.
Anyone have some advice on how to make a Promethean at least rival a Eidolon or companion?

You are right. It's a very entertaining concept, but the Promethean alchemist loses most of his combat ability, especially in terms of a first level start. He can't heal/buff others until/if he takes the infusion discovery at 2nd level -- but then he can combine this archetype with the Chirurgeon (losing poison use) I guess that leaves him and his minion using crossbows for a good while. With levels and gold, his Craft Construct bonus could become relevant.
I think the class is an afterthought to the Promethean Disciple discovery to play around with the original (tiny lab assistant) homunculus concept. In some ways it is better than an eidolon. It doesn't go away and it doesn't sleep, so it's a super watchman. Also it's smarter than an animal companion or an eidolon. It could be really useful in some campaigns, but maybe not so much in a dungeon crawl. Of course, you could have the original (Bestiary 1) homunculus without taking this class or archetype.
