Assisting another player

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I'm sure this has been asked and answered somewhere but the sheer number of threads I haven't been able to find the answer. So I apologize as this is probably a duplicate. I just started playing PACG last weekend with the RoRL base set.

Question: To assist another player do you have to be at the same location as the player? Also can you assist with combat if you are at the same location?

It depends on what you mean by assisting.

If you mean, "do you have to be at the same location as the character attempting a check to play cards or use powers that affect the check, then no. The cards or character power will tell you any limits, like same location or type of check. You can play Aid or a Blessing of the Gods or a Blessing of Ascension regardless of what location you are at compared to the player attempting the check. But look at Grizzled Mercenary, Longbow, Allying Dart +1, or Potion of Charisma (not sure what adventure path(s) you have so I'm giving lots of examples). They both make reference to what location you are at. So for those cards in particular, it matters. Likewise, Blessing of the Gods doesn't care what kind of check it is, it just adds 1 die. But Blessing of Torag can only add 2 dice to a non-Combat Strength check. So the powers will tell you what limitations to care about.

If though, you mean being able to help by attempting a check to defeat or acquire on a card that has multiple checks, then yes, you must be at the same location as the character that encountered the card.

WotR Rulebook p12 wrote:
Only the character who encounters the card may attempt the check, save for one exception: if a card requires sequential checks, the character who encountered the card must attempt at least one of the checks, but other checks may each be attempted by any one character at the same location.

Thanks. Your explanation cleared it up. I was meaning both ways you answered I just wasn't sure how to word without getting long and convoluted. Thanks again I am really loving this game. And I only have the base set and the second add on (Skinshaw Murders) right now. We just started the very first Brigaboom adventure so your help has me on the right track now. Thanks again.
