Some pre-AP scenes for In Hell's Bright Shadow

Hell's Rebels

Unfortunately, I won't be getting my pdf for a couple of weeks (not a subscriber) but I want to start the game sooner than that.

From what I can tell, the AP will start with the 'public protest'. However, I thought of having the players roleplay a couple of previous scenes: a) arrival of Barzillai Thrune and b) proclamation of fist seven edicts.

I figured that this would be a good way to start to get a feel for the PCs, ties to Kintargo, other NPCs, etc.

Let me get a couple of ideas about the 'scenes'...

a) arrival: how do you see this happening? big pompous show? on a carriage pulled by hell hounds? by sea or land? big entourage?

b) proclamation: public plaza? by him or his subordinates?

Thoughts?

A: I actually feel that Thrune would be the kind of guy to get into Kintargo late at night and post his proclamations for all to see in the morning. Otherwise, I think he would roll in within a magnificent carriage and an escort of Hellknights on horseback.

B: As above or he would gather the people before Castle Kintargo. There, he would make big speech declaring that the former mayor has left for Arcadia and proclaim himself the new overlord of Kintargo. He states that most everything would remain the same, save for a few decrees. A Hellknight would then read off the proclamations. When the gathered crowd grows unruly, the dottari would quickly and forcefully 'disperse' the crowd.

Barzillai's arrival in the city coincides with some significant events that come to be known as the "Night of Ashes." The dangerous thing about incorporating these scenes into the game is that you'll run the risk of a PC being at ground zero in an encounter that will just destroy them.

The adventure has more info, of course. But you might also want to wait until you have all 6 adventures (or at least the first 4) to do something like this, since there's more information about things going on behind the scenes spread throughout the campaign.

Starting the campaign before you have the actual adventure in hand is a pretty risky stunt, in any event... the info in the Player's Guide is meant to be non-spoilery, and there's a LOT of secrets that are in play in Kintargo.

The campaign will be a PBP; they are 'slow' so I'll have all 6 books by the time the PC are halfway through the 1st book. :)

I figured I would keep the events to start to get a feel for PCs. In a PBP, I would describe the scene (s) and ask the players to react to them but they won't engage directly. It's more of like what were you doing when you heard the news, what did you do (engage NPCs, etc.).

Thanks for the warning.
