Either a way to not sleep through the night(Like the spell Keep watch, get a wand or scroll of it) or a way to defend against mind-affecting. Since Nightmare has an evil descriptor protection against evil will stop it, dunno if there is a constant item for it but its a first level spell so either pay someone to cast it on you all night for a fairly cheap price or buy a ring of sustanace x2 and have a friend cast it on you and sleep for only 2 hours then they can slee for only two hours.
If someone can help I know a clear spindle gives protection from possesion as per protection from evil, not sure if it applies here because its a mind-affecting spell but I dont know if it counts as mind control(I dont think it does).

Dispel Evil will flip the tables quite nicely and is likely available at the levels a CR 17 creature is a foe.
The range (unlimited) seems to indicate the target must be on the same plane of existence. So anything placing the target on another plane should do it by putting the target out of range.
Unlimited: The spell reaches anywhere on the same plane of existence.
A Rope Trick would do this since it creates an extradimensional space and has the following text:
Creatures in the extradimensional space are hidden, beyond the reach of spells (including divinations), unless those spells work across planes.
By 8th level the duration of Rope Trick should allow a night's undisturbed rest.

This might be a bit extreme, but becoming a vampire or a lich would grant you immunity.
Also, surrendering to sleep deprivation for a few nights.
Depending on your GM, wearing Truesight Goggles while sleeping would grant you immunity. I say depending on your GM, because they might not let you use sight-based magic items while you're asleep. According to the rules, it should work.
Counterspelling the nightmare would also work, though it may be tricky to do exactly as you fall asleep.
Spell Resistance can help, as can anything that boosts your Will save. Including, say, Owl's Wisdom.
Finally, as My Self wisely told us, your favorite teddy bear.
Especially if it polymorphs into an owlbear and fights the wendigo for you.

Dispel Evil is listed as a counter to Nightmare but it isnt actually a counter. You would have to cast Dispell Evil while they are casting Nightmare which means you would have to know right when they are casting it(Since it can be cast at any point in your 8hour sleep) and while it has a cast time of 10min it doesnt go into effect till the casting is complete which means you dont know its been used till the nightmares come.
The rope trick though is an excellent way to get around nightmare aswell though, especially since its a Core spell so almost any GM would allow it(Unlike Keep Watch). So far Rope Trick and Keep watch sound like the best ways to get around Nightmare.

According to the rules that does -not- work. Items do not treat you as having the spell, the items are treated as having the spell. You must physically look through the goggles to gain the benefits of truesight, which you are not doing while you are sleeping(even if you sleep with your eyes open).

Thank you for the clarification. I take it casting true seeing and permanency on yourself would still work though, since then the magic is on yourself and not the item?
The reason I'm pursuing this line of inquiry is because nightmare is a phantasm, even though you're asleep and can't see normally. Therefore, it makes sense that anything that lets you resist phantasms should work in this example as well.
