Pact Wizard Multiclass

Rules Questions

My question is specifically in regard to True Form:

Quote:
At 7th level, a pact wizard's familiar reveals its true form, automatically transforming into an outsider improved familiar of the chosen subtype.

Is "seventh level" the character's seventh level overall or his seventh Wizard level? It seems like familiars kind of bounce back and forth in terms of which one they use.

I suspect getting an improved familiar off of a one level dip would be too good to work, but I figured I might as well check.

I believe, in this case, the transformation is a function of the archetype rather than the familiar. So, it would occur at your 7th level of wizard.

Does a familiar get levels on character level or on Wizard level? I can't suss out when it gets levels and when it just acts like it has.

Same question would apply with Spirit Binders: bonus feats for familiar at character level 5 or at Wizard level 5?

The first part is a little too complicated for me to explain right now - familiars are weird. Sorry. ^_^

The Spirit Binder, though, is similar to the Pact Wizard in this regard. Lost Talents is a wizard class feature, and those feats are acquired at the appropriate wizard levels. Likewise, since the soulbound familiar explicitly treats "the spirit binder's level as its level", its base attack bonus and base saving throws only reflect the master's wizard levels.

I can see it for the feats but I think they'd get the BAB and save progression for all levels, since it's modifying a feature that explicitly pulls from all of the PC's character levels.

A familiar is a class feature. Class features advance based on class level unless the text specifically calls out character level.

Familiar progression is tied to the caster level, but the fact that it morphs into an outsider is a separate class feature
