Inquisitor / / Swashbuckler Advice

Advice

Ok so I wanted to play a character that is based on the idea of a divine powered swordsmen.

So a Inquisitor and a Swashbuckler sounds like a good fit. Maybe take Inspired Blade (Int+Cha to Panache) and the Inquisitor. Using Domain and when he gets to 2nd level spells he can take Divine Protectiona nd use it to help him out.

I did convince my GM to allow me the Dynamic Priest feat so my Inquisitor's casting stat is based off Cha for this.

I was thinking maybe an Inquisitor of Cayden Cailan(sp?).

But I am not sure what feats I should pick as I have never played a Inquisitor before. And yes I am gonna go focusing on the Rapier.

// means gestalt here, right?

Inspired Blade gets you free weapon focus, which can mean the difference between fencing grace at the start and not. On the other hand, not getting your panache back as fast means that a character who isn't investing a great deal in intelligence has effectively less panache than a standard swashbuckler.

How high level is the campaign likely to go? From the above I assume it starts at level 1 or thereabouts.

It does mean Gestalt. And I planned on picking up Fencing Grace, since it doesn't require two feats for me.

We are not quite sure yet but 12-15 is a good guess

Is your DM allowing everything else the Inquisitor does to be based off CHA as well? Because otherwise I would think you would get much better synergy from Oracle or Paladin mixed with Swashbuckler. Unless you really need to be the skill monkey and even then, a Lore Oracle will at least smoke the Inquisitor for knowledge checks and face stuff and probably still be a superior combatant.

OK. A few feats I would get when they become available are Combat Reflexes (for the swashbuckler's parry), Lunge and Improved Critical. If you can afford a 13 strength, Power Attack, Cornugon Smash and Hurtful are a nasty combo, and inquisitors tend to be excellent at the intimidating required.

If you want to use combat maneuvers remember that trip, disarm and sunder are the ones which use a weapon (& so weapon finesse); for any others you'll need the Agile maneuvers feat too.

Note that with free teamwork feats/solo tactics you could get Shake It Off and make your saves great even without Divine Protection.

If you can persuade your GM that Signature Deed should work for swashbucklers as well as gunslingers, get that at level 11.

Extend Spell is handy for inquisitors.

I think it might help to know a little bit more about what you are trying to do with the character. If you want to focus on over all utility, it's hard to argue with 9th level spellcasting from the Oracle. Mysteries can also net some really solid powers, including scaling armor which won't hurt your Dex, invisibility, flight, dark vision, shape shifting, rerolls, free combat feats...

If you want to smash evil as hard as possible, then Paladin is great. Smite will net you the largest increase in damage in the game, assuming you are mostly fighting evil things. It saves you a feat on Divine Protection. You can can also swift action heal, though I imagine you are a little starved for swifts. You get a ton of great immunities. Oath of Vengeance will net you extra smites, while Holy Tactician will open up the door to some sweet teamwork shenanigans if you have the right party composition.

Both of these get better synergy from your CHA, and won't cost you a feat for Dynamic Priest. Inquisitor doesn't NEED great WIS, but stuff like Cunning Initiative likes it. Bane and Judgement are awesome, but both require swifts to activate which hurts them a little for you. If you do want to go down this road, you should consider the Sacred Huntmaster. Your animal companion will benefit from you teamwork feats. Outflank and Pack Flanking means you two will pretty much always have a +4 to hit, and when you crit (which will be often since you are using a rapier) your animal takes an AoO. If you have Paired Opportunist as well, you get AoO off as well, every time you crit! And it only gets better from there.

One final note: The Swashbuckler itself is often considered inferior to the Daring Challenger, a Challenger Archetype. While Daring gives up access to many of the deeds, it gets Precise Strike, which stacks with Challenge. Challenge+Smite+Precise Strike will add your level 3 times to your damage rolls. Daring Champion also comes with more teamwork feats and the ability to grant them to all allies on the field. This has great synergy with the Inquisitor. Your crit/AoO machine will go online faster, and you can share that love with your teammates.
