I have confirmed that the free crossbow provided by the Crossbow Maven archetype ability is not made of any special material. To have a darkwood crossbow, you would need to purchase it normally. I am also making a note in the next Additional Resources update to establish the sell value of the free crossbow (likely to be between 0 and 50 gp).

I don't think you get any more than the text says you get - no extras like special materials. Otherwise, why stop at darkwood? Why not adamantine?

Thanks, John!
I was hoping to have a better sense of what changes need to be made this weekend, but I will just have to chart out what I think makes sense and apply it once I know the rules for sure.

Thanks John. Turns out my faith was well placed.

I'm going through my book with a pencil making notes on what's changed. I'm nearly halfway now.

Here is a paraphrased run-down of several major elements:

  • If a feat changes, in addition to retraining that feat, you can retrain any of that feat's prerequisite feats and sell back any gear directly associated with that feat (e.g the longsword in Weapon Focus [longsword]). This should solve one of the biggest complaints we received when Crane Wing changed (and people wanted to retrain Dodge and Crane Style).
  • Archetypes are now included on the list of changed ability-score-dependent features that can trigger a rebuild. This should handle a lot of the concern regarding some of you with the occultist archetype for the arcanist class.
  • Did an item change its price? Sell it back at full price (minus expended charges), and if its still within your Fame and gp budget, you can just buy it back at the new cost.
  • [Some clarifications that also modify any favored class bonus changes and what happens when a spell changes level]

Hopefully that's enough for folks to plan out any character alterations before the full text is available on Monday.

Thank you for the preview! That helps a lot.

    Greatly appreciated, John.

  • Can we get clarification on items bought with prestige? Someone had spent 10 pp to retrain into slashing grace. (had to buy slashing grace and the prereq.) It now doesn't work for his build (TWF build)

He wanted to know if he could sell back the retraining and get back the 10 pp and go back to the way he was before ACG came out.

That is a pretty corner case thing, would it be covered under the new retraining rules? or would it require a specific request to you?

John, it sounds like you're clarifying that line in the guide to only apply to score related class feature changes?

Are Magus with Arcane Deed(Precise Strike) are just stuck with a useless Arcana unless they buy Ultimate Campaign and spend 5PP to retrain it?

Can Bucklers be sold back under this new outline?

If we already experienced table variation about using them, I imagine we'd experience table variation about being able to sell them =\.

My guess is you would be allowed to swap Arcane Deed(Precise Strike) for another Magus Arcana for free. I am less confident, but I think based on what John laid out, you would also get to swap Flamboyant Arcana for a different Arcana, since it is a prereq for Arcane Deed.

What it looks like you can't do is rebuild your Magus completely.

John, do you have any foresight to offer regarding the purge of Opportune Parry and Riposte? I'm sure I'm not the only one who built a character around that deed who got it removed wholesale from his/her build.

I realise this is pretty minor, but if a spell has changed and become utterly useless to my character, am I allowed to swap it out. Spells are not mentioned in the rule-change rebuild rules, that I can see, so I'm guessing it is probably a no.

The updated guide releases tomorrow with updated rules on errata-driven rebuilds.

    Grand Lodge 3/5

I don't see anything in the full Guide that will allow Magus to trade out their now-useless Arcane Deeds. I don't actually have a Magus, but that's pretty brutal.
