How would a cleric punish or atone if they felt like they are being a bit of a let down

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I am currently playing a Level 4 Cleric of Sarenrae who is half Gnoll & Human

I have decided for my character that after a in party death from which we have sorted out a raise I am feeling I have let this person & group down a bit & I feel my character would need to do something to atone or punish himself as the person who died was a fellow follower of Sarenrae I felt like a bit of a letdown & I am thinking my god may be a bit disapointed with me in this regard

so my question is how can I without knackering my character up can I punish myself or atone for that incident I feel that I want to do this but don't know how or where to start any suggestions pn how to RP this ?

i have just been told by GM that my god wouldnt care but if character felt different he could try & make up for it so any suggestion on that instead ?

Use the memory as character motivation to try harder next time. When in combat in the future, focus a little more on helping and protecting your allies rather than on harming the enemy. As you level up, pick feats and spells that work towards your "code". Sarenrae's about healing, heroism, honesty, light and redemption, so pick options along those lines. If your character feels guilt about it, keep in mind that redemption part applies to you too, so give your character a measurable and attainable goal to work towards. Maybe something like "save each of my allies from harm's way twice, to make up for my earlier failing".

Mortification of the flesh has been pretty popular with fanatics of all stripes.

From Inner Sea Gods, p. 136.

"Priests view casual cruelty or thoughtlessness as genuinely harmful, and if they accidentally engage in one of these behaviors themselves, they seek out the wronged person and attempt to obtain his forgiveness. They understand that goodness takes practice, and regular daily acts of kindness and virtue aid one in building the moral strength to do what is right when one’s goodness is challenged in more serious ways."

So, "in character", talk to the person who died. Discuss with them how you feel you failed them, and ask them what you need to do in atonement. As long as their requirement is not evil or immoral, you need to then do it.

There are a bunch of simple things that you could roleplay and also have short-term penalties, based on real-life religion.

Fasting for a number of days might be one option. After a few days you'll start making fort saves or taking non-lethal damage. Make a point of not going in to any inn, or offering to take first watch while the party eat. Any damage should be temporary and easy to shake off with a bit of food, rest and healing.

Holding a vigil overnight for a few days, praying instead of sleeping might be another option. I managed to find this on d20pfsrd.org:
"Characters who do not get a full night's sleep may suffer the effects of fatigue. If a PC does not get at least 6 hours of sleep, she must make a DC 15 Fortitude save or be fatigued and take a –1 penalty on all other checks and saving throws against sleep effects. A second night without sleep requires another DC 15 Fortitude save. A failed save results in the character becoming exhausted and the penalties increasing to –2. A third failed save on the next night increases the penalties to –3"

Both of these are pretty thematic, only offer penalties to your character and are reversible.

the mortification of flesh idea sounds good have to think on that

just trying to be a bit more imaginative then just flaggelation

I really don't think Sarenrae would approve of inflicting pain as a punishment for transgressions, real or perceived. She'd approve of fighting evil, yes, but only if the evil is an imminent threat or after redemption and healing fail. She'd probably be more likely to appreciate your efforts if they included helping or protecting other people instead of hurting yourself.

This is true, but Sarenrae doesn't think the OP's character needs to do anything and isn't at fault. The OP's character though is a bit (or a lot) crazy and wants to punish himself. Many (most?) fanatics actually do things that it would seem their Gods wouldn't approve of in the zeal to show how committed they are.

Branding/burning oneself to drive out the wickedness seems to me like something a crazy worshipper or Sarenrae might do.
