A reasonably large on-line community is the Pathfinder Society Online Community, PFSOC.
Many games on PFSOC require sign up on Warhorn.
You will need a Google account for the PFSOC and an account from the Warhorn site. Once you start playing games, you can stay registered for the Warhorn sites you like or regularly play at and look there directly periodically for games.

On the Paizo boards, the thread below is kind of the epicenter of PbP (Play By Post) games. The GM's running these games almost never post upcoming games on the PFS boards as they have their own waiting list for games they are going to run. Drop in and say hi. Somebody will help you into a game shortly.

Looks like all the times and tiers I can play are overbooked on warhorn (including if I made a core character).
Do they normally book online so far in advance?

FallzQuick,
Slots at on-line Cons do tend to fill up quickly, especially the prime time ones, and yes the bookings are normally opened up several weeks to a month in advance.
However, as more GMs offer to run tables, more tables are opened as the Con date approaches. The best advice I can give is to watch the boards regularly and sign up immediately if you see something you like open at a time you like.
Also, if you do sign up early and later find out you cannot play, it is polite to withdraw your sign up as far in advance as possible.

Also, don't hesitate to signup as an alternate, as sometimes people can't make it at the last minute, and the GM works their way down the alternate list to fill their table.

That's because there's almost no point since they all tend to fill up by those already in the thread.
Yes, sadly most games fill up very quickly, whether for live VTT games or PbP games. I would highly recommend setting alerts if possible for PFSOC (though you will get a LOT of notices), or just keep an eye on the thread Nebten linked above for PbP. Sometimes the games start right when they fill up, other times they take a short time to start.
Either way, it is a great way to get into online playing.

I've noticed an uptick in the number of online cons. Advertising is problematic, as the word of mouth is primarily from people that are *already* in the online communities; there isn't a FLGS that you can post a flyer at ;)
The Pathfinder Society Online Collective is an invaluable resource for playing Pathfinder on a Virtual Tabletop; I've run ~20 games with that as the mustering point :)

How is it that I am only just now learning about this?!
How often do the online cons happen? I have been trying to find a way to play and GM in a con setting like that but couldn't find anything near me. Guess I'm going to go offer my GM services and see what happens...
As to just learning about it? Not sure. The Online Play section of the boards here has been around for a bit, and I know that the PSOC has been mentioned and linked for some time even before that sub-forum opened.
I believe that the first of the online conventions was after we got our first online VC, and, checking my records, I think they started, with a mix between online conventions and online game days, in 2013.
Since then, I have seen about 2 online cons a year, along with 1 or 2 VTT Game Days, IIRC.
Best bet, if possible, is joining the Pathfinder Society Online Collective, a Google group, as that is where a lot of the online convention stuff is promulgated.
Note: If you use the Fantasy Grounds II VTT, there is an active PFS section on their boards, and they also hold regular online conventions, FGCon, which usually includes PFS games.
Disclaimer: FG2 is a paid VTT, with a free demo which some GMs can allow you to use in their games, but many GMs don't have an Ultimate subscription, but instead a Standard, which only allows actual paid users to connect to.

Thanks for the info. I only recently started the PbP society play so I suppose I just haven't been in any of the same threads it was linked in.
It's something I'm definitely interested in, even though my new job will keep me from GM'ing at the APCon this year.

Where was that advertised (aside from apgaming.tv)?

I personally have no idea. I found out about it here. I would have loved to GM in it, and grab a boon or two.

PFSOC, various Facebook groups, Google+ communities, various other places.

So I'll be joining as many of those as I can so I don't find out about them last minute like I did this one.
It still irks me that I signed up for it, only to find out I have a management meeting/seminar all weekend, and had to withdraw my GM application.

Well, Arthur posted something in the Online Play section here, then sent out a link to it on PFSOC, back on May 25th.
My copy of that email shows a thread length of 78 responses...

Pretty close, but a little low on the count.
We ran the first sanctioned gameday, prior to there being any Online VOs, in August of 2013(ish) - Official Online VOs positions came later in that year, or maybe early the year after that actually.
The first AetherCon was in 2012, and there were a number of small online events prior to that even.
There are a number of Online Conventions actually. AetherCon, FGCon, VirtuaCon, Conline/APCon, Contessa, BrigadeCon, just to name a few.
There are, roughly, four gamedays to fill in between the cons.
And there are a ton more small events that only have a few PFS games online.
We will be making sure events get more attention going forward.
There are a lot of other things in the works as well. :)
