Problems with Adventure Path volumes losing pages

I've got almost every volume in the adventure path series (Giantslayer being the only exception, and I'll get to that soon enough), and I'm a big fan of the adventure paths in general, but I feel like I have to say something about the books themselves. I can't tell you how many times at this point I've had these books start coming apart on me to some extent or other. In the mild cases, it's just a couple of pages. In the worst cases, the whole thing comes apart one page at a time. (In my experience Serpent's Skull is the worst offender, but it's not alone.) I'm gentle with my books and never treat them roughly, but I do expect to be able to have them lie open on the table sometimes (without pushing them absolutely flat, of course) so that I don't have to keep hands on them while I play. I'd say that of all my volumes, at least 20% have had some kind of issue of this sort. I generally think very highly of Paizo and its products, but this troubles me, and I'd like to have more confidence in the adventure path printings than I do. I generally prefer to be positive in my postings, but I'd like to know how widespread this problem is. Am I the only person who has this problem?

We had this problem with Wrath of the Righteous. Every volume fell to bits as soon as it was opened. By the end the poor things were more tape than paper.

It's been widely reported.

One commonly posted solution is to "pre-fold" the 64 page sourcebooks. You'll see a crease line near the spine of the front and back covers. If you fold along that line as soon as you get the book (quite hard) it makes a kind of "brace" so that when the book lies open it doesnt stretch the spine quite as badly.

I believe the solution has had mixed reviews - it certainly works for me. Like you, my first few sourcebooks (APs and campaign sourcebooks) tended to fall apart. Since adopting this procedure I havent had a single one. Having said that, I'm sure I read a post somewhere by someone who had tried the above and found it made absolutely no difference.

Liberty's Edge

I have found the adventure paths to be of a high print quality with the exception of Wrath of the Righteous. For some reason three of those books just began separating from the spine almost as soon as I had them out of the wrap.

I tend to read through the books to get an understanding of them but refer to the pdf during play so I'm not constantly flipping back and forth between the pages of the physical copy and damaging it. Not the ideal solution but it's protected the books for me thus far.

You haven't met my Council of Thieves books. <Grin> I figure I'll be trying to drop a bead of glue up the spines of a few of my books. The pre-folding technique isn't going to be enough for these... some of them are shedding pages just as casually handled, not spread wide open.
