Rules Questions

I will jump on the bandwagon with jump questions.

I want to jump up to a branch on a tree that is 10' off the ground;
What is the DC to be able to reach that branch? (assuming med creature and running start)
What check, if any, is needed to grab that branch?
What check and action are needed to swing myself atop that branch?

SRD states:

High Jump wrote:

Creature Size .. Vertical Reach

Colossal .. 128 ft.
Gargantuan .. 64 ft.
Huge .. 32 ft.
Large .. 16 ft.
Medium .. 8 ft.
Small .. 4 ft.
Tiny .. 2 ft.
Diminutive .. 1 ft.
Fine .. ½ ft.

This comes from the OGL that PF is based on, but is not in the PRD.

If the branch is 8' high and you are medium, DC=0.

4x the height (4x10ft=40dc)seems rough but there it is. The rest is set by whomever sets the Dc. It is not covered in the acrobatics section. So you can make it as easy or as heard as you wish.

This is only to get the jump for your feet to be even with the branch and dose not include your height at all.

Remember that 30" vertical is a good jump.

There are a lot of variables that would have to be considered before you could answer it effectively. Your height is the biggest factor.

To swing up once hanging would be a climb check.

DC 5 if you can brace against the trunk.
DC 30 if you cannot.

Could also be a Strength check. However, that would be a simple check of Maximum load vs. current weight.

What math do you use to get DC 30? It is the hieght x 4. So are you saying they have to jump 7.5 ft?

And if the branch was 10', then you would need to cover a vertical distance of 10'-8'=2' which is a DC 8 acrobatics check

Then, you compare your weight including gear carried, with your maximum load to see, whether you can pull yourself up.

None. Climb Skill

Table: Climb DCs wrote:

DC .. Example Surface or Activity

0 .. A slope too steep to walk up, or a knotted rope with a wall to brace against.
5 .. A rope with a wall to brace against, or a knotted rope, or a rope affected by the rope trick spell.
10 .. A surface with ledges to hold on to and stand on, such as a very rough wall or a ship’s rigging.
15 .. Any surface with adequate handholds and footholds (natural or artificial), such as a very rough natural rock surface or a tree, or an unknotted rope, or pulling yourself up when dangling by your hands.
20 .. An uneven surface with some narrow handholds and footholds, such as a typical wall in a dungeon.
21 .. A typical buildings upper-story wall
25 .. A typical buildings lower-story wall
25 .. A rough surface, such as a natural rock wall or a brick wall.
30 .. An overhang or ceiling with handholds but no footholds, or a typical city wall
— .. A perfectly smooth, flat, vertical (or inverted) surface cannot be climbed.

It wouldn't be DC 15?

Doh! Reading check fail.

Just trying to build my street cred back up ;-)

1. As per the vertical reach chart: DC 8 (two foot jump)

2. DC 20 reflex (based on the check to catch the other side of a pit if you don't make your jump check by enough to reach it.)
3. see above climb check.

2. could also be replaced with DC35 climb check (DC + 20 to catch yourself while falling.) but as a GM I am nice and would probably allow DC +10 for a controlled jump to grab the wall / branch. (see the jump across a pit and grab a wall thread.)
