What is the rationale behind reducing caster levels based on injuries? I'd understand requiring concentration checks due to pain, but level reduction seems a tad overkill to me.
i think it's pretty much the same as the -1 to hit; the pain is so much that you are not able to reach your full potential.
The only difference is a -1 to CL is a LOT tougher to deal with than a -1 to hit.
