Abyssal Rift questions

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The Exchange

I have several questions about the "Abyssal Rift" location:

1. When can you bury a blessing to flip the Abyssal Rift to its "closed" side? At any time? Only when you would normally be able to perform the "when closing" text (e.g. after beating a henchman or encountering a villain at a different location)?

2. If you have a power that lets you move at the end of your turn (e.g. Donahan) can you spend your turn exploring the Abyssal Rift, and then use your power to move away in time to avoid triggering the Abyssal Rift's "flip this at the end of your turn" power?

3. If you defeat the villain at the Abyssal Rift, do you still banish the rest of the cards in the location deck even though you can't permanently close it? If the Abyssal Rift is on its "open" side, does it automatically flip to "closed"?

4. If the Abyssal Rift is the only location that is not permanently closed, and it has its "closed" side face up, and you encounter the villain and fail to defeat it, what happens? Do you still win, since the villain has no open locations to escape to, even though you didn't defeat the villain?

1. Only during closing actions. (Note that it's not generally worthwhile to do it unless you REALLY need a temp close.)

2. Yes, but be aware that the "closed" side has another power, which flips it if you abandon the location.

3. Yes. Banishing the cards in the location is an effect of defeating the villain.
-If the Rift is on the Abyssal side, it does NOT automatically flip if you defeat the villain - because a flip is not the same as an (impossible here) permanent close.

4. Nope. The villain would go back to the Rift, because he's still an undefeated bane, and therefore can't be denied the deck he came from.

So can you only win a standard find and corner scenario if the Villain is at a location other than the Abyssal Rift?

If the villain is in the Rift and everything else is temporarily closed, the villain would just go right back to the Rift, correct?

Vic says you don't banish the cards and explains other things about the rift in this thread.

Or if all locations are closed and you defeat the villain at the rift while the "temporarily closed" side is up. Even though you don't get to close the location permanently, you still check and see that the villain has no where to escape to.

Thanks for the link. Reading that clarified the thought process immensely. My search skills failed me on this one, as I could only find this thread which pales in comparison to the other.
