Arcanist + School Familiar?

Rules Questions

Could an Arcanist take Improved Familiar and have it be of the School Familiar Archetype if he has the School Understanding Exploit?

What if he takes School Understanding multiple times? ...and then if he takes Greater School Familiar?

Nothin?

No. The School Familiar feat requires the specialized arcane school class feature. The School Understanding exploit gives you some arcane school powers but not the class feature. It is similar to how the Bloodline Development exploit or Eldritch Heritage feats give you bloodline powers but not the actual bloodline class feature.

This isn't possible since you can only take an exploit once.

Greater School Familiar has 10 levels of wizard as a prerequisite, so an Arcanist doesn't qualify.

Serpentine bloodline gives a familiar as a bloodline power

That is true, but how is it relevant?

Dark Archive

Its a potential exploit to improve familiar on. That's all

He isn't trying to get a familiar, he is trying to apply the School Familiar archetype to a familiar that he, hypothetically, already has.

Dark Archive

Yeah but the intent is basically the same. School understanding if taken twice should fill any requisite. I just mentioned serpentine because he is already exploiting to get a familiar, this just gives a familiar and a bloodline.
He feats or exploits to get imp familiar, and exploits twice to school understanding.
If needed he can archetype to school savant and that should solve any issues

Rebuild or play as a School Savant Arcanist archetype should do the trick?

Dark Archive

Doesn't need to rebuild, should be able to retrain if gm allows it.

Once again, School Understanding can't be taken twice. And even if it could, it wouldn't give you the arcane school class feature. School Understanding only give you some powers from an arcane school.

Arcanist Exploits: By bending and sometimes even breaking the rules of magic, the arcanist learns to exploit gaps and exceptions in the laws of magic. Some of these exploits allow her to break down various forms of magic, adding their essence to her arcane reservoir. At 1st level and every 2 levels thereafter, the arcanist learns a new arcane exploit selected from the following list. An arcanist exploit cannot be selected more than once. Once an arcanist exploit has been selected, it cannot be changed. Most arcanist exploits require the arcanist to expend points from her arcane reservoir to function. Unless otherwise noted, the saving throw DC for an arcanist exploit is equal to 10 + 1/2 the arcanist's level + the arcanist's Charisma modifier.

So you can't take School Understanding more than once.

Hmph. Ok, well there goes that idea. ;)
