Are characters with Perform limited to the listed instrument options? Does anyone know of a supplement, companion book, etc that expands on these options?

As far as I know, as long as you can reasonably say your character can use said instrument, it should be legal.
Take into consideration that your choice also has to be practical if you're a Bard. You can't play the Pipe Organ if you don't have a mobile version of one, but you can play the lute or the lyre.
One of my characters isn't a bard, but has ranks into Perform: Strings. I gave her a violin, saying she was a follower of Desna and practiced in her spare time.
