Face-up Barriers

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Are Face-up Barriers still considered to be "in the deck"? More specifically:

1) If you shuffle a deck with face-up barrier on top, does it get shuffled in face-up (a la Ambuscade from Sentinels of the Multiverse)? Or do you shuffle the rest of the deck, and put the Barrier back on top?

2a) If something lets you examine the top card of the deck, does it look at the face-up barrier, or the card beneath it?

2b) If something looks at the top N cards and lets you rearrange the order, can you move the face-up barrier under face-down cards?

3) If there are no face-down cards in a location, but there is still a face-up barrier, can you attempt to close the location?

RULES: FACEUP CARDS

Sometimes a card is left faceup on the top of the location deck (for example, most barriers with the Task trait work this way). The card is still in the deck, but it can only be shuffled into the deck when the condition that caused it to be left faceup on the deck has been resolved. If such a card tells you that you must encounter it on your first exploration on a turn, then after that exploration, ignore it for the purpose of additional explorations that turn; however, it still counts as the top card of the deck for any other purpose. If multiple cards are left faceup on the same deck, you may place them in any order and encounter them in that order.

1. Set it aside, shuffle the rest, put it back on top faceup.

2. The faceup barrier.
3. Nope, it still counts as part of the location deck, so the deck isn't empty.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

1. The latter: you shuffle the rest of the deck, and place the barrier back on top.

2a. The face-up barrier.

2b. No. If you have a mixed group of face-up and face-down barriers, you can affect each group (face-up, and face-down) with respect to itself, but not with the other.

Example: Suppose you have two face-up Barriers, and can rearrange 4 cards. You see the two barriers, plus two more cards; you can rearrange the two barriers (which will remain on top of the deck,) and you can rearrange the other two cards.)

3. No: the location is not empty, which is what the option cares about.

4) What happens when I play the Dodo or the Slip:

Dodo wrote:
Discard this card to examine the top card of your location deck; if it is not a monster, put it on the bottom of that deck.
Slip wrote:
On your turn, discard this card to examine the top card of your location deck. Succeed at an Intelligence or Knowledge 7 check or put that card on the bottom of the location deck.

Does this qualify as "shuffling into the deck" ("shuffling" means randomizing the deck to me, but the dictionary tells me merely rearranging cards is "shuffling")?

Those cards fall under 2b from the original question: you can't simply cause a face-up barrier to be displaced from the top of the deck. You have to do so through whatever the barrier allows (eg, if you have to encounter it as your first explore, you can use barrier-defeating methods.)

So both of those abilities would do this:

-Discard to examine 1. You see the face-up barrier (or the topmost of them.)
-Put the card on the bottom of the deck *INVALID ACTION, ignore.*

-> Discard to get information you already have, and nothing else. Not recommended most of the time.
