making the sword cane worthwhile for something other then its swag factor

Homebrew and House Rules

1. make its crit 19-20/x2, its essentially a guard-less rapier in a fancy sheath, i dont see any reason that the sword cane only having a x2 crit

2.allow the sword cane to stay in its sheath to use it as a bludgeoning weapon but its crit modifier changes to just x2 when being used in this way

3.when you unsheathe the sword cane you can use the empty scabbard to block and parry with, granting you +1 shield bonus to AC, but do to the lack of a proper handle you cant use it this fashion for multiple attacks, if you use the scabbard to block with you will lose its AC bonus after you use it to shield yourself until your next turn(much like attacking with a weapon in a hand that has a buckler on it)

thoughts?

The Exchange

The sword cane is already worthwhile. I have used it in campaigns for its practicality (as well as swag factor, at times). If you want a better weapon, just get a better weapon. Grab a short sword and a tonfa.

Scarab Sages

*shrug* I agree with giving it a threat range in line with other swords. Idea #2 would sound reasonable too, except it might wind up too good at that point. Its role as a cagey gentleman's weapon that doesn't attract the same kind of attention as heavier weapons is indeed already a worthy draw.

What do you mean by "its practicality"?

Isn't it a scabbard that you have to continuously hold? That seems impractical! You know something I don't and I wish to know what it is.

Suppose you're a rogue that walks around with his hand in his pocket and carries a (sword) cane. You stroll behind someone, pop the sword as a swift action, then show your pocket hand with brass knuckles equipped. Bingo, surprise full-attack.

Okay, so you can't full-attack in a surprise round, but you don't have to waste a move action drawing on adjacent enemies, and d6 > d4 (spiked gauntlet).

The sword cane is actually a pretty nice option for the Investigator as is. Practically all of that class's damage comes from precision so having a higher crit chance isn't as big of a deal for them as it would be for other classes.

It's practical in settings where you're not allowed to walk around with enough visible weaponry to singlehandedly decimate Custer's 7th Cavalry. You know... those campaigns not centered around the murderhobo dungeon crawl motif?
