about playing out of subtier...

someone told me if you play out of subtier you only get the gold for your original subtier. so if you play a 5-9 and play in subtier 8-9 but are level 6 you only get level 6 gold rather than Out if subtier gold. I couldnt find anything in the Guide to PFS play and was hoping someone could shed some light for me.

Page 36 of the guide, second column, Step 5:

"If the PC's level is not within the subtier played...circle the Out-of-Subtier gold value...."

So, if you you played a level 6 character, and the table played in Subtier 8-9, your character would get the Out-of-Subtier gold.

ohh looked in wrong place, thanks.

Note that Out of Subtier gold is not calculated on ACs for Seasons prior to 5 so your GM will have to calculate it by averaging the 5-7 gold with the 8-9 gold (add the two numbers and divide by 2), if it is an older mod.

The reasoning is pretty simple:
If you play in a higher subtier than appropriate you risk more, thus your reward is higher.
If you play in a lower subtier than appropriate you risk less, thus your reward is lower.

If your level is not the level of the subtier you play at, you get out-of-subtier gold. Doesn't matter if higher, or lower. You're either in subtier, or you're out.

This is an area where the rules have changed from previous. Your friend may not have noticed the changes.

Except the rules never said you get the gold from the sub-tier closest to your level.

Any change in a rule can cause confusion and it is not uncommon that people may mix up a new rule with an old one to the point that their understanding of the rule is incorrect in both the old and new situations. I can't count the number of times I have mixed up 3.5 & PF rules to the point that my brain "split the difference" and came up with a rule that wasn't correct for either game. Of course, it doesn't help that I am currently playing in 3 different systems.

The biggest confusion I encounter is with Tier 1-2 scenarios, since they're newer but still don't have an out-of-tier box for gold.

Explaining that you still need to calculate out-of-tier gold often rewards me with at least one blank stare.

New GMs have to learn sometime.

There's actually a post from John Compton saying that for The Confirmation everyone just gets the gold for whichever tier was played. I assumed the same applied to The Wounded Wisp, but I don't know if that was ever explicitly stated.

There's also one for out of tier gold.

Huh, interesting. Well, now I know.

Yup.

Exactly the sort of discussion I have when running those scenarios.
