Did Unchained address concerns over editing and development that the ACG raised?

Product Discussion

So...last spring I know the forums blew up over the editing and errata issues raised by the Advanced Class Guide, with a lot of people expressing their dissatisfaction/annoyance/etc over issues, from proofreading to exclusion of necessary mechanics to unclear rules language. Concerns that were not only expressed by the more critical members of the board, but also more moderate folks generally not prone to hyperbole.

So...with Unchained being released and making its way to people, Has this book increased your faith in Paizo? As someone who is mostly following the release via the messageboard and hasn't seen the book himself, it seems like opinions so far are pretty positive. I am not seeing really any substantial commentary about editing concerns causing confusion, and even the more critical members of the community seem to find at least a few things to love about the book (UC Rogue seems well loved, people like the VMC rules, and even the "martials can't have nice things" arguments are subdued thanks to the skill upgrades and stamina pools).

So what's the verdict? And are people becoming optimistic about the occult book thanks to Unchained?

I am carefully following the potential errors threads. By this point in time for the ACG, there were around 27 suspected potential errors, the strong majority of which were indeed errors. As of now, Unchained has 11 suspected potential errors, the strong majority of which are not errors. So empirical evidence so far suggests that the number of errors is way down (remember it's actually "better" than a 27/11 ratio because most of those 27 were errors and most of the 11 are not). Also, it seems that the errors have been lower in importance (things like saying Ultimate Campaign instead of Combat in a sidebar about other sources).

Unchained looks pretty good in my opinion. I have seen very little in the way of jarring errors like, say, the front of the Special Edition Adventure Path version of the ACG that I got. I expect and overlook minor errors like the Campaign/Combat flip flop cited above.

I'm happy with the book itself; that said, my "faith" in Paizo was never shaken in the first place. I think they beat themselves up about the ACG and have done a good job making sure that the sins of the past aren't being repeated here. Hopefully the lack of errors as well as the material will convince people that the ACG problems were a fluke and folks will be more positive.

The Exchange

For me, this certainly helps. As mark said the outpouring of complaints isn't there this time.

But until the erata itself is out for the acg it's difficult to really judge how well they've recovered. Also remember that in pfs the scenarios themselves were filled with errors.

I am curious about the statement that certain issues aren't considered errors. Can you clarify this mark?

Well, for example many of those 11 potential errors missed something from the book, like "Page 9 and 12, accurate stance rage power seems to make reckless stance an actively bad option."

In addition to another forum poster pointing out that reckless stance applies to non-thrown ranged attacks, accurate stance is a competence bonus and reckless is untyped. So it wasn't an error.

That happens a lot in potential errata threads, but I'm still always happy to check those threads anyway to make sure we look at each potential concern!

I only worry for folks who dont' use forums really.

Since they tend to put out FAQ's etc on here, but until reprinting they don't put it up on the paizo prd (I think? sometimes it seems like it). So folks who don't use the website and just bought the books tend to have more issues. Or folks like my friends who won't take anything until the change shows up on the PRD itself sorta thing. (I suppose because theres FAQ's and then theres printed solid stuff)

I haven't had a chance to read much more than the Rogue, Monk, and Skill Unlocks section, but it seemed MILES better than the ACG in just those sections.

I like Pathfinder Unchained so much, after reading the PDF i ordered the hardcover. That´s my third hardcover after CRB and Gamemasters book, since i stay PDF only normaly due to shipping and customs cost.

Unchained could also be seen as an extended Game Mastery book, since the options there are as much for GM´s as for players.

So how did you manage to get the PDF without an RPG line subscription?

Probably wait 10 days (till Apr 29) and order it from Paizo then, or at least I imagine.

If a guy at the LGS is a subscriber and has the PDF it's perfectly legal for him to put it on his tablet and show off his book to his friends.

Dragoon already covered it, but I assume Hayato's already seen it the way I already have - by having a friend who's a subscriber and showed me the PDF.

And yeah, based off the PDF I've ordered a hard copy too. LOTS of good stuff in this book.

I assume that Hayato got it as part of the PFS Venture Officer Content Review teams, as I recall him being a part of that. :)

I was one of those people who was critical of the issues regarding the ACG.

But in good faith I have ordered Pathfinder Unchained (hardcover), still waiting on its delivery.

I contributed to the Occult Adventures playtest and I could really see a duty-of-care being taken with these future books (Unchained and Occult).

And with the strengths of the Pathfinder Unchained previews it was enough for me to be confident in Paizo's products again.
