This came up while considering the metamagic SLA feats - which run into an apparent problem when I realise how Summon Monster scales.
The question is this. Suppose I'm 12th level. Normally, I use the class ability as Summon VI. Can I use the ability as Summon I-V instead of VI for a given usage? Or do I only have VI?

There's no reason you'd want to lower it
SM6
This spell functions like summon monster I, except that you can summon one creature from the 6th-level list, 1d3 creatures of the same kind from the 5th-level list, or 1d4+1 creatures of the same kind from a lower-level list.
If you want a summon monster 5 then you get 1d3 of the creature. If you wanted SM4 or lower you get 1d4+1 of the creature.

RAW, you only have the highest level version. It reads "the power of this ability increases by one spell level," without any language indicating that the increase is optional. (eg: every 2 levels beyond 1st, you may use the next most powerful Summon Monster spell for this ability.)
It would be a reasonable houserule to let you downgrade it, since it's not any more powerful than Metamagic spell feats. But the GM might then require you to only use the lower-level version - such that if you take Quicken (Summon Monster) at level 12, you can only use Quickened Summon Monster II and not standard Summon Monster VI, or at least that 3 uses of your SLA must be Quickened Summon Monster rather than the more powerful version.
