Covering Fire... Questions about it...

Rules Questions

Okay, folks, I need a few more pairs of eyes to gauge how this feat interacts with other things.

1 - Since this is an aid another action, does the +2 bonus get modified by: A) Helpful trait? B) Aid Allies from Order of the Dragon Cavalier? C) Benevolent Armor?
2 - Can Swift Aid be used in conjunction with it?
3 - It's a teamwork feat, so how would it interact with Ring of Tactical Precision?
4 - If multiple instances of Covering Fire are placed on the same target, do they stack?

Thanks ahead of time to anyone that replies!

Cheers!

Bump. Still looking for a few answers here.

Liberty's Edge

Dude, it may help you to cite what 'Covering Fire' is. The Pathfinder Player Companion: Ranged Tactics Toolbox isn't exactly a commonly known source book.

Silver Crusade

It is often useful to put both the source the material came from, and at least something about what the material you are discussing is. Especially when the source is somewhat new.

Covering Fire is a feat on page 10 of the Ranged Tactics Toolbox. It uses the Aid Another action to shoot an enemy and give +2 AC to a designated ally for one round.

1A:
(from Archives of Nethys)
Helpful (Halfling)

Source Halflings of Golarion pg. 30
Requirement(s) Halfling
You see nothing wrong with letting others achieve greatness so long as the job gets done. Whenever you successfully perform an aid another action, you grant your ally a +4 bonus instead of the normal +2.

I see no reason that this would not apply. You are using the aid another action, and need to be successful.

1B:
(from the APG)
Aid Allies (Ex): At 2nd level, whenever an order of the dragon cavalier uses the aid another action to assist one of his allies, the ally receives a +3 bonus to his Armor Class, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check. At 8th level, and every six levels thereafter, this bonus increases by an additional +1.

I see no reason for this not to apply, either. Nothing restricts it to adjacent opponents or anything, just succeed on an aid another action.

1C:
(from Ultimate Equipment)
BENEVOLENT
Price +2,000 gp; Aura faint enchantment; CL 5th; Weight —
This suit of armor best serves a wearer who focuses on assisting and protecting his allies. Benevolent armor is usually decorated with motifs of prosperity, plenty, and generosity, such as helping hands, cornucopias, and flourishing plants. When the wearer of a suit of benevolent armor uses the aid another action to give an ally a bonus to AC against an opponent's next attack, he also adds the benevolent armor's enhancement bonus to the ally's AC.
CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Cost +1,000 gp
Craft Magic Arms and Armor, aid

Again, I see no reason for armor with the benevolent property not to work.

2:
(From the APG)
Swift Aid (Combat)
With a quick but harmless swipe, you can aid an ally's assault.

Prerequisites: Int 13, Combat Expertise, base attack bonus +6.
Benefit: As a swift action, you can attempt the aid another action, granting your ally either a +1 bonus on his next attack roll or a +1 bonus to his AC.
Normal: Aid another is a standard action.

You are using the aid another action, again here. You can only use it on the AC bonus for Covering Fire, but there should not be a problem.

3:
(from Ultimate Equipment)
RING OF TACTICAL PRECISION
Price 11,000 gp; Aura moderate transmutation; CL 3rd; Weight —
This steel ring is inlaid with adamantine swords and shields. The wearer gains a +5 competence bonus on Profession (soldier) checks, and anytime the wearer gives or receives a numeric bonus from a teamwork feat or the aid another action, that bonus increase by +1. By wearing the ring for 1 hour, a creature may imbue it with a teamwork feat he knows for 24 hours. During this time, any creature wearing the ring may use that feat when cooperating with the creature that imbued it, but not with other creatures even if they possess the same teamwork feat. If the ring is imbued with a new teamwork feat, it replaces the previous feat.
CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Cost 5,500 gp
Forge Ring, creator must have 5 ranks of Profession (soldier) and at least one teamwork feat

This also works on the Aid Another action, and would add to the AC of an ally designated, and all allies who also have the feat. You can imbue the ring with the feat, no problem.

4:
(from the CRB)
Aid Another
In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent's next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack.

You can also use this standard action to help a friend in other ways, such as when he is affected by a spell, or to assist another character's skill check.

Because the bonus from an Aid Another action is untyped, multiple instances of Covering Fire would not stack with each other, per the limits on stacking bonuses. Untyped bonuses from the same source do not stack.

I don't see any way that this is really broken. You can add a few bonuses to AC to an ally against attacks from a single opponent. This can be high if you have a helpful halfling cavalier with benevolent armor, but it is only against a single attack.

Hope this helps.

Benevolent stacks since you are using "the aid another action to give an ally a bonus to AC against an opponent's next attack," but you and other allies with the Covering Fire may not get the bonus from Benevolent (it's open to debate).

Swift Aid spells out the bonus it gives when using a swift action to use aid another, so it would not be compatible with Covering Fire from a RAW standpoint. I believe the intent is clear and a reasonable DM should let you use Covering Fire as a swift action with

The Ring stacks.

The Order of the Dragon Aid Allies stacks, and technically works with Swift aid to give a +3 or better bonus since it sets the bonus and never refers to "+2"

Helpful (and the better Helpful halfling race trait) both stack, but don't technically work with Swift Aid or Aid Allies with the same caveats that it should at a reasonable table, but not at a RAW table.

Red/Desolate,

You're totally right. I should have listed where the feat was from or linked it. It is up on the d20pfsrd site, but it doesn't mean those looking to help should be searching for my information.

All,

Thanks, guys! Pretty well answered my questions.
