Possible BB Campaign Series

Beginner Box

So I'm thinking about writing a multi-level campaign for the BB ruleset. Taking the PC's from lv 1-6. At first it was just for my own use, but I'm wondering about the community:

There used to be a vibrant set of discussions on the BB forum, now not so much. Would there be any interest in me putting these on the internet as I write them? I remember when I first got my BB I struggled to find good material designed for it.

I also have the same idea, and had writen a pair of it by now, I´ll be delighted to compare styles with you.

And of course I´m interested to post it to the web too, let´s see if anyone else is interested.

I'd definitely be interested. I've been using the old 3.5-era Darkmoon Vale modules with the Beginner Box rules, but a set of adventures written specifically for the BB would be really nice.

I'd buy it.

I wonder of PFBeginner would be interested in hosting the items when they're written....

I think the BB has pretty much been replaced by the Strategy Guide for new players, at least in Paizo's eyes.

I hope not. After reading the Strategy guide, I prefer to use the core rulebook for brand new players than the Strategy guide. Its not that useful to someone brand new as it doesn't really do a good job at describing how things work or even character creation.

It is decent for a transition for someone who has already USED the Beginner box, as many of the terms and concepts are familiar at that point.

For someone just starting though, there are FAR too many terms and concepts that are unexplained that it's more hostile in some ways (From what I've seen thus far) than even the CRB.

From what I can tell, they never actually tested it with someone who had NEVER played an RPG in their life. It doesn't really explain the concepts all that well.

Not sure why this came up in this thread though.

The Strategy Guide explicitly recommends the Beginner Box, especially if you're new to playing or GMing.

The Strategy Guide doesn't even replace the Beginner Box Transitions guide, as the Transitions guide describes how specific Beginner Box concepts change in the Core rules, while the Strategy Guide breaks down how to apply the Core rules to specific character concepts.

In a reverse fashion compared to D&D, Paizo effectively released a rules compendium first as the Core Rulebook, then a DMG with the GameMastery Guide, and then a PHB years later called the Strategy Guide. The Strategy Guide wound up marketed as a book for new players, but it's more of an aid for experienced GMs to help new players.

The Beginner Box is still a different product with a different audience and purpose, and still the best way to bootstrap a new GM and new players together into Pathfinder.

Back on topic: I'd follow along, ShallowHammer. Definitely reach out to Denny at PFBeginner, and maybe the Wayfinder crew as well since they've been running Beginner Box adventures.

I kind of saw the progression as Beginner Box -> Core Rulebook -> everything else and that the Strategy Guide was supposed to massage the transition from the Beginner Box to the Core Rulebook.

As someone who has played well past the Core Rulebook I like the Beginner Box as a product not just because it is a good place to start but because it's kind of fun as a simple and fast to start alternative. I feel like it has the potential to be the D&D 5th edition of Pathfinder as a sister product that plays simple, easy and lower magic than the core game.

I'm a bit selfish in this opinion because I'd prefer to do that than use 5th edition. Despite the critical acclaim I don't like 5th edition to much compared to Pathfinder but I use 5th edition as my go-to fast and simple system because it does the job so well. The Beginner Box with a lot of support would be preferable because it transitions to core Pathfinder better and I prefer Pathfinder.

I have Here the first adventure for my own personal campaing of the BB, however it is in spanish, maybe I can translate it for the forums if anyone is interested.

Maybe we can turn this into a thread where people post links to adventures they've created for bb?

Iker: Can you put your adventure in a place don't require registration?

I've been using the Beginner Box to teach my 7-year old how to play. She's learning well, but I doubt we'll get beyond Beginner Box any time soon. So I'd be greatly interested in additional adventures. I've downloaded everything I can get my hands on so far but it's pretty exclusively designed for first level. It'd be nice to have some adventures for later levels.

OK. As I write them I'll post them.

Check out the Wayfinder Fanzine here on Paizo.com. The issues are all free to download, and we started to do BB adventures starting with #9.
Several of these are for levels above 1st I believe.....

+1 Wayfinder! The adventures include full-color annotated maps, and each issue adds Pathfinder RPG creatures converted for use with the Beginner Box with full-color art.

Here's summaries for the Beginner Box adventures released so far:

Wayfinder #9

  • Into the Dark, a ghoul-hunting crawl set near Sandpoint by Alex "Daviot" Putnam for four 2nd-level characters, designed to connect to Black Fang's Dungeon or the GM Kit's Deadly Mine.
  • The Gateway to Nar-Voth, a Darklands trek for four 4th-level characters by Mark Garringer that starts in Sandpoint.
  • Beginner Box conversions by by Paris Crenshaw and Mark Garringer:
  • - Creatures: derro, drow, drow noble cleric, morlock
  • - Spells: bleed, daze, ghost sound, dancing lights, deeper darkness, faerie fire, silence

    Wayfinder #10

  • Profit of the Prophet, a slave liberation mission for four 3rd-level characters by Mark Garringer that's set in Katapesh.
  • Beginner Box creature conversions by Mark Garringer, including print-and-play pawns sized to match the Beginner Box's: gnolls, a gnoll cleric of Lamashtu, and an otyugh

    Wayfinder #11

  • Little Devils, an investigation at a magic academy in Westcrown for four 2nd-level characters by Mark Garringer.
  • Beginner Box conversions by Mark Garringer:
  • - Creatures: gaav and imp devils
  • - Spells: detect good, ventriloquism
  • - Cleric deity: Asmodeus

    Wayfinder #12

  • Riddles For A Sphinx, an Osirian tomb crawl for four 4th-level characters by Paris Crenshaw and Mike "taig" Welham.
  • Beginner Box creature conversions by Paris Crenshaw and Mike "taig" Welham: criosphinx, scarab swarm

  • I've been working on a campaign, but it's got a bit stuck. You can view it here: Trouble at the Border.

The first part is a dungeon crawl, the 2nd part ends a bit abruptly. The main reason I stopped is that I can't decide whether to rewrite it for core rules (core rule book and bestiary 1) or continue using just the BB.

There's a bit at the end where I try to fit the Survival skill into the rules, but I will probably take the need for that out.

Feedback appreciated (you can message me here.)

If I can say something: Stick to the BB rules.

I'd say keep it bb. I believe there is no Survival skill in BB rules, but I've always substituted Knowledge Nature and it's worked out well in my games.

I'd love to see additional quick-start adventures and campaigns for the Beginner Box!

Have any of you seen these "Mini-Dungeons" (link) by AAW Games yet?

    Spoiler:

In principal, they seem like a fantastic idea: a short, themed dungeon-crawl for a specific level ("A party of Level 1" or "A party of Level 4-5"), which fits on one sheet of paper (front and back), consisting of:

    I. Half of the first page is a GM map (showing hidden doors/rooms, monsters, treasure, etc.)

II. A short paragraph under the map describes the dungeon scenario ("This lair is a seasonal home for a small group [insert monster here] that [insert reason for PCs to get involved here]. If hunted by the PCs and tracked here, they retreat into the inside of this [insert dungeon theme here - "temple", "cave", etc.)"

III. The rest of the pages contain descriptions of rooms, encounters, traps, and treasures keyed to the map. For example:

"2. Guard Room: The 10 foot-wide entrance to this chamber is protected by a pair of well-concealed bear traps and occupied by four hobgoblin warriors (CR 4) that leap from the table and grab their weapons to defend their home. A number of old boxes and barrels are stored within this chamber, but contain nothing of value; the hobgoblins carry a few trinkets but nothing of import. The wooden door to the north is locked from the other side with a simple mechanism (Break DC 15 or Disable Device DC 20)."

In the one I've seen so far, the last room basically contains a nice treasure, and an effective pointer to a further adventure of the GM's choice, such as... "This room is [insert one or two sentences of nice description]. It contains gems worth 1,500gp, and a note with a message that is left up to the DM...."

It looks like a nice, clean, beginner-friendly format that shouldn't require much tweaking to work well with the Beginner Box, and in principal, at least, it should be a great way for a beginning GM to run a quick adventure with almost no preparation.

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be very many of these yet, really only one or two so far are for a party lower than Level 5, and the mini-dungeon I've seen so far lacks Pathfinder's unique atmosphere and style (something the adventure in the Beginner Box does quite well!)

However, it doesn't appear like it would be too hard to create a series of one-shot mini-dungeons in a similar format but more Golarion-flavored, for parties between levels 1 and 5, starting with a flip-map-friendly map on the front page that makes use of the Beginner Box dungeon or which can be easily sketched on a blank map, followed by simple room descriptions with some encounters based off the Beginner Box rules and monsters, designed to be loosely related enough to each other that a Beginner Box GM can quickly improvise a campaign with them, or use them for side-quests or one-shot adventures, or seeds for home-brew campaigns.

AAW Games' mini-dungeons seem like a decent product and the US 99-cent price tag seems more than fair for what you get, if anyone wants to take a look (Since it seems like an idea worth borrowing, I feel it's only fair to help give their products some exposure and credit for such a nice idea. I'm not related to the company in any way: I bought one to have a closer look, and I definitely intend to write a more detailed review of mini-dungeon I bought another time.) My only complaint about them is that the two 1st-level mini-dungeons don't really seem to fit the Beginner Box or Golarion style precisely (they feel like more of a generic D&D approach to me), and there really isn't anything available for levels 2-5, where it seems we could use some more Beginner Box adventures.

    The short version is:

Pros: Something like these one-page mini-dungeons seems like a great way for a Beginner Box GM to run a short adventure or construct a loose campaign with almost no preparation, and the basic layout and approach lends itself well to making Beginner Box adventures.

Cons: There's currently a lack of mini-dungeons for the levels covered by the Beginner Box, and the generic descriptions and encounters really need a little TLC to add the right atmosphere and mood to fit into Sandpoint.

I think there's some room for Beginner Box fans to make a few unique one-page adventures for the Beginner Box for free, without stepping on AAW's niche too much at all.

It took me a while but I finally finish the translation of my first, BB Adventure, Pigtongue the ogre, using the hooks found in the BB GMG.
