Brainstorming for Kingmaker

Advice

My group is about to wrap up CoT after about 2 years on that adventure and we are talking about doing either Giantslayer or Kingmaker next. I have a solid concept for Giantslayer but I'm at a bit of a loss for Kingmaker because it is such a unique sort of AP compared to the others.

My first thought was to do a mounted Halfling Slinger. I've experimented with a Cavalier, a Nature Fang Druid and a Hunter to that end but I am not pleased with any of the results. I'm not sure if I will abandon my Halfling altogether; I'm still interested but I need to find something that screams "YESSSS! I am your build!" Does anyone have any suggestions on how to realize my vision? Alternately, how about any other suggestions of fun and interesting characters to play for Kingmaker?

For the most part, I prefer a caster of some sort and generally favour divine over arcane although that is not a hard and fast rule. A bunch of the other guys in the group are already fighting over who gets to be the king/queen. This, coupled with the fact that I rarely play face-types, means I am not interested in pursuing the crown for myself. Other than that, I'm pretty much a blank slate.

Thanks for any help you all can offer. I appreciate it.

Silver Crusade

If I get a chance to play Kingmaker, I think I'd go for a Magus with the student of the sword (+1 atk with Aldori dueling sword/longsword) trait. He was sold to a wizard as an apprentice at a young age, but always admired the duelists and practiced swordwork in his spare time. At the start of the adventure path, he runs away from his master and joins the expedition.

Grand Lodge

Archers do well in this campaign.

Nature types do very well outside the town your building. Lots to do with scouting, survival, and plenty of wildlife.

A hunter or ranger does really well.

A friend of mine was doing a archer ranger/lantern bearer that was wrecking in combat.

I recommend druid, hunter, or ranger since your not facing.

You will also have downtime for crafting items. I recommend as shops and magic items on demand might not be possible. Craft wondrous items will come in handy to the entire group.

I'd say just pick the thing that calls to you most. Be as bizarre or as offputting as you like. You're the king (and his equally powerful lieutenants), so you don't have to worry about what your subjects think too much, unless you're sacrificing them on a stone altar in the middle of town.

I'm not an expert on slingers, but mounted is definitely going to be possible in Kingmaker, especially for Small character who can read Medium mounts. On a less mechanical note, the more distinctive you make your character, the more fun you'll have. Kingmaker is to tofu of APs, it takes on the flavor of the things around it, meaning the PCs. If you're a druid, you can make a grove in the city and that's cool. If you're a very strange druid, you can make a sloth sanctuary, or even grow the trees in the grove into sloth shapes. It's a horrid example, but you get the idea.

Also, just a heads up, the Kingdom rules are a bit wonky, so maybe have your GM take a look at them beforehand.

Nothing I saw was really nailed down but based on your written interest of halfling and divine caster.... I recommend being an evangelist cleric with a side of slinging. Your charismatic but not seeking the glory, your supportive of friends but not dependent upon them, you are small but your value is large.

We can build such a character a few ways but I like this idea to be based on traits. The first shall be fates favored. You have been very lucky in your life and when you use the adaptable luck alternate racial trait to for your rolls Lady Luck will smile you on once again :) but those who are blessed should share in it as well and so you shall take the helpful trait. Because of your kindness towards others when you aid another, they will receive a +4 to their action. Your their lucky charm!

More generic help for your friends include the heavenly package with your best hits including inspire courage, performances of your best melodies, and more. Should you choose to read the page in your book you can receive for only the cost of a feat ,lingering performance,to receive triple the performances (also sold in stores). But wait there more... You also have a full list of spells that in a pinch can cure, restore, or fix up all your favorite records with your fellow recording artists like "Fighter Got Bit" by Venom and "Send Me AN Angel" by SUmmon Monster

But of course what cleric would be complete without their deity? We present Bes. This lady presents with the happy choices between luck and protection for BOTH variant channeling and domain. can you convince your band to take fates favored with you? Then luck channeling is for you can't go wrong with protection.

Renegade, I do love the Evangelist Cleric. You present a great idea that I fear suffers from the same troubles as my other attempts: slinging is a feat intensive pursuit and not as rewarding as archery. An effective Evangelist has even more feats that I really ought to take and I'd need to take a domain that gives a mount so the domains you suggested are a wash :( I fear I am spreading myself too thin, expecting too much from one little Halfling.

That said, I hadn't considered going this route so I will see what I can do with it. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am still open to any other ideas, not necessarily Halfling and not necessarily a slinger. Keep them coming please and feel free to stray as far as you like from vague preferences mentioned in the OP. Thanks!

If you don't go the slinger route maybe you could just go dervish? Would take just two feats and you could get a benelovant weapon so as it alternate between aid another and doing your own attacks. A +10 (aid another) +4(inspire courage) + spells, flanking, or such is nothing to sneeze at for helping your friends.

A quick Google suggests that the Warslinger trait combined with a Halfling slingstaff & the Ranger Archery style may be the way to go. Rangers are thematically appropriate for Kingmaker and you'll pick up your mount at level 4.

As an alternative, how about a Nature Oracle? Not natural slingers as they tend to dump Dex and use Nature's Whispers for AC, but another to consider nonetheless.

Ah dang! Nature Oracle is another one of the builds I tried. It's far too Charisma-based for my liking. Sorry, I tried to mention all my attempts to avoid duplication but this one slipped my mind.

I'm not completely opposed a Ranger however I feel a mount from level 1 will be vital to the Halfling build. Is there a way to make that happen on a Ranger chassis?

A druid can definitely go a long way in KM. Not sure how to go about getting the slinging aspect attached to it, but I doubt you'd need to go full feat line to still be effective as a druid -- especially when you consider the companion. You can probably even talk the GM into letting you have a companion that can double as a mount (can't recall the default list of companions off the top of my head).
