Wall of Blades

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Suppose I that Oloch encounters the Shrouded Queen, who requires 2 combat checks to defeat. Suppose Alahazra plays Wall of Blades when Oloch first encounters the Queen. If Alahazra takes the second combat check against Oloch, then can she still play a spell on that check (say Geyser) and use Wall of Blades, too?

Yes. The Wall of Blades is played "When a character encounters", which is a different part of the encounter sequence than attempting a check.

Thanks, Malcolm, for the clarification

Sovereign Court

So she could, in fact, even play a spell on Oloch's check since it's a different step.

Alahazra can play Wall of Blades (display it) when a character encounters a monster (it is "When you encounter a card" step) and then if she takes the second combat check she still can play an Attack spell (it is "Attempt che check/next chek" step, i.e. a different step). It's Ok.
But I think she can't play an Attack spell on the second combat check AND also use Wall of Blades.
Because of this rule: "Activating a power on a displayed card also counts as playing it" and this topic: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2rr6e?When-do-you-play-Sphere-of-Fire#23
In other words Wall of Blades looks like a kind of spell you have to make a decision to use it (like Rage).

Wall of Blades:
"Display this card when a character encounters a bane. Any character who attempts a combat check this turn MAY recharge 2 cards to add 2d8 and the slashing trait to it."
