I just learned about the ACG this past week, and I have decided I'm going to take the plunge and purchase one of the base sets. I doubt I will ever play with more than three other people. More likely I will be playing a 2 person game.
I have not played any of the Pathfinder RPG AP's off of which these are based, so whichever box I get - the content will be a surprise. I know that RotRL has a typical fantasy theme, and S&S is pirate themed... Not sure what WotR is... But they all just seem FUN! The game design/mechanics just seems great.
But I just can't decide..... Which base set should I purchase and why?

It was based off the original Adventure Path. It introduced the main (iconic) characters for Pathfinder RPG. It was the first Pathfinder Adventure Card Game set which set the standard for the game and introduced all the mechanics. Everything is based upon it.
Also, all three sets have boons ... boons are just cards that your characters use for their decks: weapons, spells, armor, items, allies and blessings.
Nothing was really removed moving from RotR to S&S. It was that stuff was added to the base (like plunder and ship mechanics). You also added Pirates and Swashbuckling.
As far as sets that are out now, RotR is a bit easier to understand and a little bit easier to play. S&S upped the difficulty.

Both are very well done. Me and my wife enjoyed rise of the runelord, mostly because it seemed to be a little easier. Skulls and shackles is fun but much more difficult. Either way they are both fun and very challanging.
I had some difficulty at the begining of RotRLs but after after the first box, it became too easy. This was probably due to learning the system.
Im looking forward to starting the S&S one, I hope its more challenging.

oh - i thought when the blurb about WotR mentioned boons - it was just a different name for what S&S called plunder...
OK - i am not sure i can delay my gratification for another 2 months (this was supposed to be a birthday present for myself, afterall). Between the fact that they seem to have straightened out all of the RotRL card quality control issues by now, and the fact that my 8 year old son is likely to be my most frequent party companion, the simpler version of te game is probably best. Also - its not like RotRL is a cake walk or anything.
If I like the game as much as i expect i will, i may just have to invest in WotR come fathers day :)
Thanks everyone.

If you get Rise of the Runelords, be advised that there are two different printings. The second printing is probably the one you want to get. It will match all other PACG products (except First printing RotR). You can identify the second printing by looking on the back of the box. The first printing all say "Printed in China." The second printing all say "Second Printing. Printed in the USA."
If you buy from Paizo, you will be sure to get second printing (unless you buy non-mint).
Good luck on your adventure.
