The Demon Etrigan

Comics

Any fans of Etrigan the Demon aka Jason Blood from the The Demon comics?

Jason Blood betrayes Camelot and Arthur in hopes of winning Morgaine heart. This lead to Camelot’s fall so Merlin binds the demon Etrigan, who is Merlin’s half brother and a demon Merlin uses to fight for him, to Jason Blood as punishment. Merlin hopes that together they will temper and torture each other, and hopefully they will do some good in the world.

Jason Blood summons/transforms himself into Etrigan with the spell/chant:

Yarva Demonicus Etrigan.
Change, change the form of man.
Free the prince forever damned.
Free the might from fleshy mire.
Boil the blood in heart of fire.
Gone, gone the form of man,
Rise the demon Etrigan!

Blood gain several powers from this from super strenth to magic to being able to huge amounts of damage. Also Etrigan stops blood from aging.

Blood/Etrigan also appear in some Batman comics and cartoons.

I really like The Demon if this sounds cool try checking it out, if you're a fan lets hear something from you.

I've only seen him in Detective comics, and in Justice League.

He went well with Alan Grant's writing.

"Born in hate? Fear Made to live?
Feh, you're nothing, a mortal shell
But if it's hate you want, it's hate I'll give
All the hate in Hell!"

I never read many of his solo stories, but I always enjoyed is appearances in Detective comics, as well as the "team-up" story with him in Action comics during Byrne's run on the book. Plus he as an interesting addition to the team as Blood during the Obsidian Age storyline in JLA, even if the overall storyline didn't work for me.

oh yeah, i have the entire collection :) hehe and to think he is on the side of the good guys hehe; sucks to be Jasons freind though; one of this friends got turned into a sentient pillow to be sat on my a big, fat demon; guess i am gonna have to reread; i forget names. Not to much around that is really in Etrigan's league but the comics are good.

I believe Etrigan also showed up in "Sandman," where he spoke in more elaborate poetry, not just doggerel. I would guess he's also in "Lucifer," though I haven't read that in a while.

A few cameos in Swamp Thing too . . .

Etrigan is one of my favorite DC characters, and I remember well the story you quote, if not the actual issue of Detective Comics it came from. Etrigan used that line right before he blasted the Tulpa with his hellfire breath.

Yup. I love the reason he spared Batman at the end though.

he saw himself in Batman, the exact quote I don't know.
I'll have to try to find that Trillogy.
Some infernal inspiration it must be.
Hope I can rhyme on the fly,
next time the PCs a demon come by.

I love Etrigan's guest appearances pretty much anywhere, but he just doesn't seem to be able to carry his own comic for very long without it becoming terrible.

The exception is Matt Wagner's "The Demon" 4-issue series from back in the late 80's some time. My all-time favorite version of Etrigan.

I don't remember it all, but what I do went something like:

"Because there's something deep inside you, man, that's very much like me. For now when caged in flesh and bone, I'll take comfort knowing I'm not alone."

I'm pretty sure there's an Omnibus of Kirby's run coming out this summer.

The original version by Jack Kirby is very different than the Demon as presented today. The Kirby version is very cool, and well worth checking out, as I am a big fan of Kirby's stuff. That said, the Demon character really came into its own with Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing. Here the whole concept of being a rhymer demon as a rank in Hell's hierarchy was introduced and many of the concepts that have become familar ground for the character were brought to light for the first time. Check out the Saga of the Swamp Thing trades by Alan Moore, not just for the Demon elements, but for some of the finest comics stories of all time. DC's whole mystical realm was revamped in this run, characters like John Constantine were introduced, and old faves like Etrigan and the Phantom Stranger were reinvigorated and revised into much more interesting takes on the character.

The Matt Wagner 4 issue Demon limited series mentioned a few posts up is also well worth checking out. The Garth Ennis written series (i.e. the later issues of the aforementioned Alan Grant series) is not a particular favorite of mine, but then I am not a big fan of Ennis. I find that he rewrites the same half dozen character personalities and types over and over in whatever series he is writing and that these characters are interchangable form series to series. Some people really like his Preacher and Punisher, and some of his plots are interesting, I just feel I am reading the same characters with the same dialogue no matter what Ennis is writing, so I cannot recommend his Demon run.

I haven't read the most recent Blood of the Demon series that John Byrne and others were the creative team on, so I cannot comment on that one.

One of the more interesting recent takes on the Demon that I have read was in one of the recent DC novels called Trail of Time. It is essentially a superman tale, but the Demon and Phantom Stranger play prominent roles in it, and the trio of villains are classic DC mystical foes. It was written by Jeff Mariotte and is well worth checking out.

Anybody know what that conversation between Etrigan and John Constantine Hellblazer was about? dont know much about it; am reading the Constantine novels and read that they had talked in the comics and something about some other guys like swamp thing; but would really like to know what he and Etrigan would say to each other.
