Corresponding Movement Type

Rules Discussion

Some actions such as Sneak and Sudden Charge allow you to replace a subordinate Stride with Burrow/Climb/Fly/Swim "if you have the corresponding movement type." Does this mean you need the actual Speed associated with the action, or do you just need to be in a situation that allows the action (underwater to Swim with Athletics, on a wall to Climb with Athletics, etc.)?

I have always read that as needing the movement speed.

Most encounters are in a situation that allows a Fly action. But allowing Sneak or Sudden Charge to let you Fly without a Fly speed...

Movement types are categorized in the rules as actually having the speed. So even thought you can take Swim and Climb actions without a Climb/Swim speed you don't actually have these movement types unless you specifically have a climb/swim speed.

Movement Types

Yeah, I can kind of see where you might think you should be allowed to swim while sudden charging without a swim speed...but not really.

If you have to make a swim check, you're normally limited to like 10ft of movement in the first place because you can't swim well/fast. So it doesn't make sense to me, to think you could suddenly do it charging or stealthily.

Same for climbing.

Flying or burrowing should be very obvious they can't be done without the corresponding movement speed.
