How do you calculate the CR of being attacked by an intelligent item?

Advice

Question in the title.

What is the AC, HP, attacks, saves and stuff of the item? Is it a brainy sword or a golem with a Will of its own?
Calculating home made baddies is about both fingerspitsgeful and numbers. But we need more than the titel to answer.

Depends on the DC of it's abilities? You could treat it like a trap, or just look at what a creature of that CR should be able to do.

So calculate based on bestiary reverse engineering or as a trap. Good enough for me. I was just in doubt as to whether there was a seperate system for the CR presented by hostile items :)

Thanks.

Try this. In practice, many actual monsters don't fit it, because they're not average. If it's supposed to be exceptionally good at magic and exceptionally weak physically, for example, DCs would be higher, melee damage and bonuses would be lower, and so on.
