Improved familiars, Speak with Animals of its Kind, and Archetypes.

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

As written, it appears to me that the only archetype an improved familiar is capable of obtaining is sage.

This is due to the line in the improved familiar description: "improved familiars do not gain the ability to speak with other creatures of their kind (although many of them already have the ability to communicate)". With this ability already being given up, I don't think you can give it up yet again for an archetype.

Is this another case of paizo's lack of vigilance, like cavalier animal companion archetypes, or was it actually the intention that archetypes be functionally unavailable to improved familiars (if so, this seems rather strange).

Familiars are long overdue for an FAQ.

Since the animal archive where familiar archetypes got introduced, it has been obvious the intention is that the familiar archetypes aren't available to improved familiars (well to the current exception of Sage familiar). Well less obvious to those who do want their improved familiars to get stronger options.

But more recently here's [http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2rwp5&page=2?Familiar-Folio-fun-What-else-can-you-do-with#100]Mark Seifter's opinion[/url] on the matter.

My comments here are just my personal opinions as the author, not binding errata in any way. That said, I think that Improved Familiar is an incredibly strong option no matter what (indeed, the dominant option, and I've rarely if ever seen a familiar that didn't go improved at some point). So I wouldn't be too upset if there were now more reasons not to go Improved Familiar. Variety with cool options whichever way you go, adding more choices that are both effective and cool, makes the game more fun, I think, and making the best option better doesn't do so as much.

I will simply say that the wording of mauler looks suspicious:

A mauler isn't impressed by fancy words—only furious battle. A mauler can't speak, even if it's a type of creature that normally could.

Most common familiars are unable to speak outside of the abilities it that are traded away. Even the raven, which can speak early on, only does so because it is a familiar, and not because it is a 'type of creature that normally could'.

When it comes to talking familiars, you are usually referring to improved familiars.

....at the same time, I tried looking at that new fighter archetype (which lets you share your feats with the familiar when it is close by) and found that I turned a cutesy little fey bunny girl familiar (the pooka) into a second fighter if I threw on mauler.....Yeah, it got boosted up to medium, and the scaling strength bonuses were about on par with the damage boosting class features of the fighter. Throw on some feats, and I got double the fighter....
