basically you target an unattended object or one in your hand, and then beginning on the following round, all creatures within like 30 ft. take progressively more damage each round starting with 1d6. it lasts for rounds/level also increasing in radius by 5ft. each round.

this would be great if you were immune to the spell damage.

If you are within the damaging range, yes, it hurts you. I'd recommend ditching the item very quickly after you cast the spell.

I guess throwing it to a square targeting AC 5 and taking a -2 to attack for every increment beyond 10 feet?

To a maximum of 50 feet if you're throwing it, yes.
